Say goodbye to daylight-saving time (Set your clocks back 1 hr tonight)
Houston Chronicle ^ | Oct. 29, 2005 | News

WASHINGTON -- Prepare to set your clocks back one hour on Saturday night because Daylight Savings Time is coming to an end.

Daylight Savings officially ends at 2 a.m. on October 30th.

Federal law does not require states to observe Daylight Savings, but those that do must abide by the rules. From 1986 to 2006 the period has been the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October.

In August of this year, Congress passed a bill extending Daylight Savings. Starting in 2007, it will be observed from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, extending the period about a month.

Arizona and Hawaii are the only states in the U.S. that don't observe Daylight Savings and stay on "standard time" all year long.

Many U.S. territories don't set their clocks back and forth, either.

The notion of Daylight Savings is credited to Benjamin Franklin, who is said to have first had the idea in 1784.

This is such a rotten deal for Alaska; we get nothing out of it, it makes no difference in "daylight savings" and it is a waste of, er, TIME!!!

I ALMOST forgot!!! Good grief. I would have arrived at work an hour early and missed church. Thanks for this thread.

When I worked at a church, I was the admin assistant for the music pastor. We had an 8:00am service, so the call time for the worship team was 7:00am. I usually would get there around 6:30am, to setup the music, turn on the soundboard and prepare the multimedia computer (which I ran).

I LOVED the end of Daylight Savings Time. It was one of the rare days that the perpetually late members actually beat ME to the "soundcheck". I used to say that if this is what it took to get certain people to come on time/early, let's have it every week!

I get to work an extra hour tonight because of this....

I used to work graveyard security officer, at the two hour changes. I always got paid for the extra hour, and even though I lost an hour in April, I knew it was coming, and could budget for it.

I honestly don't know what they think they are accomplishing with that change. They're not getting more daylight

Daylight Savings Time pushes more sunlight into hours during which people are actually awake instead of sleeping. A 5 AM summer sunrise does little to conserve energy, since few people are up. More people are awake at 7 or 8PM and can use the extra hour. Having DST year-round would cause the sun to rise too late in the mornings, potentially endangering kids walking to the school bus.

The time change must be REALLY pointless in Barrow, which will have 0 hours of daylight after mid-November. It's pointless in Hawaii since the state is close enough to the equator that they get 11-13 hours of daylight every day.

It's really Groundhog hour because at 02:00 you reset to 01:00 and then when it's 02:00 YOU DO IT AGAIN...

I have a nuclear watch. I have to very carefully remove one uranium rod and store it until April.

I will simplify the process for you.

Have you ever heard of the state of Colorado? yes or no.

Have you ever heard of the city in Colorado called Boulder? yes or no

Have you ever heard of the element called Cesium? Yes or No.

Did you know that there is a Cesium atom Atomic clock in Boulder, Colorado? yes or no.

Did you know that clock is America's "Timekeeper?" Yes or No.

Did you know that it transmits its time to attuned clocks that are tuned to its transmission frequesncy? Yes or No.

Well some folks understand the process and, we have leveraged onto this technology.

OTOH, there are some folks are so out of touch, it is mind-bogling.

It's TIME for me to take the hounds out with my musket and search for wart hogs with Jethro in search for fresh fooood.

*rolling eyes*

I did it exactly as they said to do it: "At 2:00 AM set your clock back one hour."

But then an hour later it was 2:00 AM again and I had to repeat the process. This has been going on for hours now.

Oy! I'm one of those Northerners who needs her sunshine. It's not unusual for me to be bundled up, outside, staring up at the sun like a loon about 2pm each day from now until spring...when it's not overcast and snowing on me!

Funny. The rooster started crowing at the exact same time this morning as last. I'll have to explain Daylight Savings Time to him.

But can someone first explain it to me? LOL! :)

Pretty sure there are more than one Cesium beam clocks involved in keeping "official" time. And, btw, the US is time keeper for the whole world.
