Vanity Thread: Reporting an odd occurrence yesterday in Houston
10/29/05 | kinghorse

I experienced something weird driving around 4:30 PM CST yesterday and decided to vanity post to see if any other Houston people know about this.

I was driving on the Houston West Park Tollway yesterday when it happened. I'm attempting to gather more information about before contacting authorities.

If you were on this tollway in Houston yesterday, did anyone else notice the large open 30 X 30 shipping door attached to a warehouse before you get to Gessner and Beltway 8 on the right side of Westpark going west? It's got a large square aluminum or ss steel tubing assembly with rotating spray fittings situated about every five feet of the tubing spraying out a fine mist. It looks like the frame to a gigantic sports net without the net, but what it is is a giant spraying station or maybe even a large automatic car wash, if you get my drift. The only problem, it's big enough to drive a Mack truck through.

When I saw this and I swear I did, I immediately thought of the mystery smell reported in Manhattan Wednesday night I believe. I had my windows down in the car and as soon as I passed this place downwind I smelled a smell almost like cocoa butter or a very sweet fragrance presumably emanating from this structure. I got goosebumps when I ran into this smell after seeing the contraption. What a way to test area coverage. You couldn't miss the smell if you encountered it. I imagine a group trying to ascertain the efficacy of an aerosol attack would send out a signature smell first to determine wind drift and coverage.

How difficult would it be to lease empty whse space around a town and set up thes misting contraptions connected to a air compressor and a venturi atomizer spraying something sinister into the air? Around Harwin and Westpark there are miles of cheap whse space in business parks. Every big city has these areas that abutt residential areas. First responders would perish along with the people unlucky enough to be hit by the chemical or biological substance being sprayed. I imagine perps could set up such a contraption and just walk away and watch the mayhem. It's be like a sniper scene where the people coming to save get taken down until you have big pile of people and the hazmat people show. Terrifying.

I'm going back over there today to see if it's something normal for manufacturing before call the police. Crazy times and because it's been so long between a huge attack, everyone's letting up their guard. I'm not.

This country needs alert people like you. I say notify the authorities. Even if it's nothing it COULD be something.

Gessner and Beltway 8

Pretty close to me. Thanks for the heads up even if it turns out to be nothing.

This spraying assembly was INSIDE the warehouse?

Well, if it smells that fragrant, for heaven's sake don't report it! You've found the only place in Houston that does smell good.

You need to sit down and have a scotch (or 10), I recommend Glenlivet.

Good for you being alert!

I wonder if your comment about it being a wash for big trucks might not be near the truth.

As to the aroma, I found this post on yesterday's New York "smell" thread pretty credible. Don't know if it would apply in your neck of the woods, though:

I can 99% guarantee that the smell is coming from a honeybee hive.

In the fall on a frosty still night you can smell one from hundreds of yards away.

It smells like candy being cooked. We used to locate many bee trees while coon hunting every fall.

Please check it although I bet the door's closed today. It was like something they rolled up to the service bay of the whse, rolled up the door and turned on. Again it looks like a gigantic automatic car wash or painting station. But it's as big as a small hanger. Go down the Westpark Tollway towards Sam Houston (Beltway 8) and look to the right before you get to like an overpass I want to say. The warehouse iS off to the right of the WestPark Tollway before Gessner (but it could have been before Fondren) on the right about 300 yards off the tollway. The bay door where the contraption was spraying was opened and facing the tollway.

You can call the FBI or the police, but a call to the city planning department or building department would deliver the needed information almost immediately without using the limited bandwidth of the police. The police would end up calling the planning department anyway.

I happen to be partner in a company that has taken technology from the special effects (snow, fog & haze) machines used in the movie industry, to create a haze of a berry fluid that drives birds away from processing plants, airports & etc. This patented technology breaks down the berry juice (approved by the FDA) into less than 5 micron size particles, and when birds breath it the hate it and don't return. It has a very slight fruity smell to it.

It is used inside large structures such as food processing plants that have lots of trucks going in and out, so birds have easy access, and poop on your food. Big deal now with the Bird flu coming.

You want to invest?

Please don't bother the police, they have much better things to do then react to silly drama queens looking for attention.

Just yesterday you breathlessly posted this thread in Breaking suggesting that there might be cyanide in Manhattan:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1510956/posts

Despite the fact that if you'd searched just a little bit you'd have found a thread about it revealing that it was no big deal, the smell having appeared on and off there for at least 14 years:

That's interesting.

Might I suggest you get the address of the complex and contact another tenant within the complex and find out who the land owner is, or who the property management company is, because they might have rules against certain types of activity within the complex. Your excuse for asking for the information is that you are interested in leasing some property.

Once the property management people start snooping around - and believe me they do - let them be the ones to report it to the police. Not that you can't - but the property management people or land owners have much more clout - because tenants have laws they must comply with.

If it turns out to be some illegal activity .. well .. you'll know you did your part to take them out of business.

They'd probably call the property owner or the management company.

Well this should interest you. My Mother is 88, she never leaves the house unless I take her out to eat. Which we haven't done lately. She has come down with a terrible flu. I have been treating her the last week. She wanted me to call the CDC because she is worried about the Bird Flu.(She seperated some chicken last Sat)

Ofcourse the CDC said no and gave me the specifics of Bird Flu. I fo to the doctors office every month so I think maybe I gave it to her. But that has been two weeks ago. Our roommate came down with it several days ago. and now today I feel like c. I take the Westpark tollway to my Doctor but the time frame is to long I think.

Since most construction requires a permit at some point, and cities are somewhat demanding on this point, the planning or building department would have a copy of the permit and perhaps building plans. Most cities already have much of this information online so having to get the information on the weekend wouldn't be a problem.
