October 29, 2005 -- SO, after 28 months, what we are told is this: Scooter Libby, the vice president's chief of staff, lied about his conversations with two reporters. He lied about those conversations first to FBI investigators in the fall of 2003 and then to a grand jury in the spring of 2004. And in telling those lies, says independent counsel Patrick Fitzgerald, Libby sought to impede the investigation into the public exposure of CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson.
That's all, folks. The grand jury in the most hotly watched Washington political-legal investigation since Whitewater concluded its business yesterday by returning charges against one man and one man alone who, the grand jury alleges, didn't tell the truth about when and how he discovered a piece of classified information.
Scooter Libby was not charged with the misuse of that information, or with the unlawful exposure of an undercover agent, or with involvement in a conspiracy to reveal her identity. He is, it is worth repeating, charged only with lying about his knowledge of it.
Here's how it breaks down. Libby testified that he first heard about Valerie Wilson's identity in a phone call from NBC's Tim Russert when, the indictment flatly alleges, he never discussed her with Russert. In any case, according to the indictment, Libby had learned Wilson's identity at least a month earlier. That's the basis of two of the five charges.

Millions of our tax dollars being spent to bring down the administration that we conservatives voted for. I am sick of the whole thing.
I start to think Volcker did a good job... Imagine, he issued a final report after only about a year... with a scope of investigation that was much larger than who-told-Bob-Novak-that-my-wife-is-a-CIA-agent investigation...
Wouldn't this be "he said, he said" pitting Libby vs. Russert?
I wonder what makes Russert's testimony more believable? There can't be much corroborating evidence, as it was a conversation between two parties.
Such a shame that "Fitzmas" was ruined for so many on the Left....
That is right! This committee will just keep searching and searching until they trip someone else up. All on our dime.
What's worrying is how rock solid the indictment is on the alleged lie re: Libby and Russert. If I were a suspicious, cynical type :) I'd think there is a recording of the conversation.
Has anyone thought to ask Bob Novak?
Said it on another thread, I'll repeat it: Valerie Plame ain't worth all the fuss.
Charges but no crime, fake but accurate.
There has to be a a recorded conversation between Russert and Libby to prove Libby lied or else this is just the word of one person against another.
Its the Age of Clinton.
True, and sad. There seems to be a similarity to Martha Stuart except that she had something to gain, even if it was a small amount.
I think Libby needs better lawyers. Bush specifically told everyone to cooperate with the investigation. There was NO executive privlidge. So, either Libby lied for no reason or he may really not remember specifics as to who told what to whom when.
Perhaps Russert recorded the conversations with Libby? I believe it's ok in D.C. as long as ONE of the people is aware the conversation is being recorded.
Boy you got that right, mainstreamed lying and MSM caught the wave.
Or, there could be collusion among the press. They collude all of the time, don't they? It is probably their agreement that make him seem a liar.
Yep, that's it. And the media is gloatingly, gleefully opening each hour, everything they can, with 'indicted on 5 charges' and 'perjury'. It brings to mind Clinton's impeachment trial and his slimy, lawyerly line, 'depends on what the meaning of is is'. Seems the nedia were less interested in that.
Millions of our tax dollars being spent to bring down the administration that we conservatives voted for. I am sick of the whole thing.
And they can't burn through the money fast enough. It's like they've been waiting to 'get even' for conservatives picking on the Clintons actual lies, and nothing else is more important. It's a disgusting display.
Really? Where? Seriously, I never thought that most of America cared. If Libby lied under oath he should face the consequences, but I never thought that this had riveted anyone's attentions. Maybe the inside-the-Beltway crowd.
Speaking of Clinton, Why didn't Mr. Libby who's an attorney, just say "I don't remember" or "I don't recall". The phrases worked quite well for the Clinton's.
