Japan Welcomes U.S. Nuclear Warship to Its Waters

TOKYO — Basing a U.S. nuclear-powered warship in Japanese waters for the first time will boost stability in East Asia, Japan's government said Friday, hailing an agreement even as it drew protests from the community that will host the aircraft carrier.

The U.S. Navy on Thursday announced the deal, under which Japan — which the United States attacked with two nuclear bombs in World War II — dropped its longtime opposition to hosting a nuclear-powered warship in its territory.

"Japan believes that the continued presence of the U.S. Navy will contribute to safety and stability in Japan, the Far East and the world," Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda said Friday.

He said the agreement would not threaten the safety of Japanese residents, who have long been wary of a U.S. nuclear presence because of fears of radiation leaks.

If you look at japan and Germany over the last 50+ years, you'll find that Japan has caused little or no trouble whereas Germany has been nothing but trouble.

I think that Japan has learned its lesson.Germany will never learn theirs.

We really should whisper a little word of thanks to our allies, the Japanese, for their part in this deal. I've got a picture of France allowing one of our nuclear ships to base in LeHavre.

I sense the fine hand of Condi Rice in this successful arrangement.....though she'll never get the credit.

Go Condi !

The Japanese have done well in the world speaking English since WW2. I can see why they do not want to shift gears and start learning Chinese.

I don't know about that. The French will surely never learn, but after the German's last election. They might be starting to see the light. Who knows.

With the upcoming decommissioning of the Kitty Hawk, they had a choice: accept a nuclear powered carrier, or not have a carrier stationed in Japan at all.

I know that. But their supposed excuse, has been that they where afraid of any radiation leaks from our ships.

They are just simply coming to their senses. Has nothing to do with Condi.

Has it occured to you, that we have wanted to use their ports for many years, and that up till now they have refused. Now what do you think Condi had to do with it. What deal did she set up with them, to change their minds?
And my question is rhetorical, I do not expect you to come up with an answer.

They are finally realizing that it is foolish to think our nuclear subs, carriers, cruisers would somehow emit radiation and harm their population. That has been their on going argument for heaven knows how long. Please correct me if I am wrong. With the Chicoms becoming more of a threat to them along with the eraser heads goons, they finally figured it was time to end the foolish charade. And to boot. They have advanced significantly in recent years in building up their commercial nuclear power industry. So it has been absurd that they wouldn't permit our nuclear vessels to enter their waters and dock. After all, we are fairly close and trusted allies. Then again perhaps you know of a deal the DoS has offered to change their minds, and surely it would be interesting to be informed. Take note I do not challenge your post in the spirit of not liking Condi, for I do. I just think it is a natural progression they have reached based on their realizations Russia, China, and NK are no friends to them in any shape or form, and they must allow our forces to become closer integrated.

Reunification with the brainwashed, anti-American, socialist/commies of East Germany didn't help.

Hello honorable JaponSan.

The (non-nuclear) Kittyhawk is nearing the end of its lifetime. We cannot refurbish it anymore and we will not build another non-nuclear carrier.

If you want a USA Carrier between you and Korea, it WILL be nuclear.

So sorry.

Feel free to go on without the protection of our carrier group.

Much respect.
