If participants have their way, the state whose former governor was laughed out of the 2004 presidential race after the infamous Iowa scream is going to take what some call its wackiness and others call its sanity in a crazy world and go home.

Ethan Allen, who led the Green Mountain Boys to take Fort Ticonderoga from the British in 1775, was among those in attendance, in the person of actor Jim Hogue. Ticonderoga fell without a shot fired, and it was agreed Friday that the new revolution would have to be nonviolent as well.
"Let history record that we, still carrying on without firing a shot, brought to their knees all those who, in the name of security made enemies, in the name of patriotism wrought treason and tyranny, in the name of peace made war and in the name of liberty would turn us into slaves," Hogue's Allen said.

I've been saying for years that Vermont, not New Hampshire, is where the Free Staters need to settle. This is a state that's ripe for a lot of their pet projects. And if they were to actually elect Libertarians to the House or Senate, they would be replacing useless crap like Sanders, Jeffords and Leahy. They would be better almost by default.
And any state that can elect Howard Dean are obviously snow-blinded already.
Vermont wants out? I'd vote for that. Totally out.

Don't be so dismissive of these guys. Their thinking opens the door to something called "Tax Parity" that is an ultra-radical idea that States receive no more in Fed money than they put in. If it went through, many Red States would be devastated, as the Blue States are the engines of the economy.
The Free Staters in New Hampshire might agree with Vermont. But for entirely different reasons.
Let’s see - this is the second time that a New England state has “seriously” discussed succeeding from the Union. The first time was during the War of 1812 - something about their pocketbooks being hurt by the British blockade.
I wonder if this large (?) group of five-year olds (that is what they are behaving like) really understand what is going on? Yes - they would have their own way. But how many intellectuals could afford to remain? If (once?) succession occurs every resident in Vermont becomes an alien to the rest of us (well, officially becomes an alien to the rest of us). This means border crossings, passports, inspections of private connivances, international trade negotiations, tariffs and similar protectionism on all exports to Vermont as well as all imports. And the list goes on and on. In a short time all capital (physical as well as intellectual) would flee Vermont because they couldn’t afford to live there and that is before the “Free State of Vermont“ begins massive collectivization of private property because that is the only way to “pay“ for their new found freedoms. Like most five-year olds, those who are running their mouths are incapable of thinking their statements through to the logical ends. All they see is the immediate fulfillment of their immediate need - everything else comes much later and is left for an adult (Mommy) to solve. The problem with this group is Mommy is only six years old herself.
In the last century there was a political slogan which said "As Maine goes, so goes the nation."(Hence the Maine state motto, "Dirigo"). After the 1936 election, when Alf Landon carried only two states against FDR, some wag suggested the slogan be changed to: "As Maine goes, so goes Vermont."
