I know its more fun to be a hysterical drama queen, but if you had bothered to search, you'd find a news story from 1010 WINS that this has already been investigated. Even though they don't yet know the source, the air quality checks revealed no problems, and one resident was quoted as saying he's been smelling it off and on for more than a decade.

Due to global warming, which of course is Bush's fault, huge new maple-tree forests have sprung up in Manhattan, choking out entire neighborhoods and office buildings up to 20 stories tall. People are simply smelling the sap. Here's a photo taken just this morning of what was formerly Times Square:
