Washington, D.C. – Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid released the following statement on Harriet Miers’ withdrawal of her nomination to the United States Supreme Court.
“The radical right wing of the Republican Party killed the Harriet Miers nomination. Apparently, Ms. Miers did not satisfy those who want to pack the Supreme Court with rigid ideologues.
“I had recommended that the President consider nominating Ms. Miers because I was impressed with her record of achievement as the managing partner of a major Texas law firm and the first woman president of the Texas Bar Association. In those roles she was a strong supporter of law firm diversity policies and a leader in promoting legal services for the poor. But these credentials are not good enough for the right wing: they want a nominee with a proven record of supporting their skewed goals.
“In choosing a replacement for Ms. Miers, President Bush should not reward the bad behavior of his right wing base. He should reject the demands of a few extremists and choose a justice who will protect the constitutional rights of all Americans.”
"Yes sir... we could have a good fight and get a worse defeat that Miers..."
You forget that we will likely pick up some Rat Senators support making defeat less likely. A conservative nominee will be won by persuasion and argument, not by slight of hand or slinking from the fight. If we lose, it will have been in a noble effort for a good cause, and then we can nominate some other conservative.

California is dominated by the big liberal cities, like L.A.. Look at an electorial map and you'll see most of the rest of California is Republican. However, the Dems ARE the majority in California, and the Republicans won't be Republican if they simply adopt the Dem platform in a contemptible attempt to win. It's better to stand up for what's right until a majority of Californians see the error of their ways.
Watch, and learn.
you won't see a Luttig or Rogers-Brown. but there is a thread running now with a list of possible candidates - plenty of women candidates who are not "flash points", yet have solid judicial records nonetheless. let's see McCain lead the charge to vote one of them down, and then campaign for president in 2008.

We won't know until he nominates one. But from your question, can I infer that you think Roberts is less than conservative?
With the extreme rightwing and the Democrats teaming up Miers didn't stand a chance.
What are you? Harry Reid? "Extreme right wing?" Give me a break. Anyone who is not an originalist is not a conservative. Period. There's nothing extreme about it. Either the words mean what they say, or they don't. No grey allowed.
Now we will be fighting a losing battle.

It sad but this issue has weaken the Republican majority. It is now consider to be an insult to be a Bush supporter... We are called names like "bushbots" and are being driven off this board. Too bad.
That's because this isn't a Republican forum. It's a conservative forum. You don't support the personality or the party, you support the ideas. In this case, supporting conservatism meant bucking the president, which we successfully did. It's a very happy day. At least now we have hope.
Might as well just give up then. Hell, let's just give the Democrats the next pick and be done with it. Oh wait, that's what we did on THIS pick! Miers was Harry Ried's idea!
Yes, like we "watched and learned" with the Gang of 14 fiasco?! Any conservative moonbat who really thinks that Dubya is now going to nominate a choice that they would approve is delusional. Be careful what you ask for, because now that Miers has withdrawn, Dubya will go even more moderate with his next choice. The conservatives have no idea how much they have damaged themselves with this debacle.
don't know if this is true, but my son just came home from school and said that the 9th Circus has decided that the Pledge is unconstitutional. If he's right--that will drum up tons of support for a conservative--even from the mushy middle.

No one has asked you to leave this board, and how can you possibly be "driven" off? We can debate the issues without resorting to personal attacks. I hadn't thought about it before, but the term "Bushbot" does imply you are unable to make up your own mind on the issues. My apologies if I've used it against you.

I would guess that is very accurate. And no matter how moderate the judge is... the dem talking points that will be pounded, and pounded, a repeated, and repeated are "the president has bowed to the radical right wing of the party and nominated this ultra conservative judge who is not in the mainstream of american values"
I just love it when the scumbags act not only like they're in charge, but that their warnings and threats are because they have the best interests of Republicans at heart.

Check out post #19 and the quotes therein. The people who are squealing about this are doing so because it is of political benefit to them. Groups are squealing that didn't even support her in the first place. They're playing the "fringe wackos have taken over" card. It's completely disingenuous, but we've let them do it.
And it's a sight to watch!
Oh, boy...lots and lots of fun. Not. Ugh. Dreary.

Spoken like someone who doesn't live here. "We'll let the other side destroy the state first, THEN the people will wake up." Madness, utter madness. It's this madness of the "all or nothing" crowd that has turned off the indepedents and moderates in this state and has transformed a once reliable Republican state into one where the socalists rule the roost in Sacramento. The Democrats have run the state off the rails, and yet NOT A SINGLE ONE lost their Assembly or State Senate seats in last year's election. NOT ONE. 121 billion dollars in structural debt. The state is facing a six billion dollar deficit in NEXT YEAR's budget. And that's before the Soclalists begin toying with it. The Republicans in the Assembly and State Senate are powerless to do anything to stop them, such is the Democrat's majority. A couple of more seats in the Assembly and State Senate and they will be pass the last check on their power: the 2/3rds requirements for new taxes. Thank goodness for the Governator (fewest bills signed since Reagan's first term as Governor, more vetoes than Jerry Brown in eight), otherwise things here would be much, much worse. The "all or nothing" crowd has cost the Republicans California, and now they are about to do the same with the SCOTUS.
Somehow I doubt that Bush is going with a less conservative pick than Miers in the face of fanged opposition from most of his base. Bush promised a Scalia or a Thomas; now it's time to deliver.
As for the rest, I can only say: "Trust the Turtle."
