just breaking!!!!!!!!
This is the best news I've heard in a long time!!!
Yes
someone completely out of Shumer's mainstream.
It's like this: We're not going to get a solid constitutionalist on the court wihtout ruffling some feathers. The Dems are not going to just let one sneak by them.
So what's your strategy for getting your dream candidate nominated AND confirmed? I guess that's my point.
This was no red herring.... this was a serious miscalculation. They really thought "trust me" would work.
This bullying of Miers has given great ammunition to the Schumers, Leahys, Kennedys, Clintons, etc of the left.
Agreed - Some on the "right" really went off the deep end on this issue -
And the bottom line is many have shown themselves to be no different (intellectually speaking) from the DEM's arguments - In that they do NOT trust GWB - They only trust the "outcomes" they like -
I.E. DEM's don't trust GWB on going to war - Those on the right don't trust GWB judgment on the war either...they only agree because THEY feel going to war is right (themselves) when they are completely in the dark to 50% of the information surrounding going to war - But they agree with the outcome of going to war so they say the support GWB -
You're right it would be a dumb move, but President Bush doesn't face re-election so who knows what he'll do ultimately.
I only wish she had enough support in the Senate.
If he goes too conservative, the moderates will control the course of the nomination. I don't think Bush wants that -- it'll make him look too weak.
I don't see that this is a "sure sign" Rove will be indicted. Regardles of IF or WHO is indicted, we'll have a shot at taking back the agenda next week with a new nominee.
(Personally, I think Libby is the target...and I think he'll enter a plea. We'll see.)
Worth repeating.
"Yes, I'm very happy. Wanna bet that either Luttig or someone of his conservative bent is nominated? I'll support Luttig all the way. Miers was too questionable in her standings and we CANNOT afford to risk another Ginsburg or Stevens making to the bench. "
I agree.
I also hope against hope that GWB can get the nominate-by-quota approach out of his mind, and put up the best PERSON -- not just the best woman. And, like Rush says, stop trying to hide who we are and what we believe in. The Republicans act like little kids sneaking through a lunchroom full of bullies to buy a cupcake. Someone should remind GWB that part of being the leader of our party is to lead - not to placate the damn RATS. Am I one of those who want a fight? You bet. I WANT a strong conservative candidate. I WANT the RATS to whine and moan and hold their collective foul breaths about it. I WANT them to fillibuster, and I want us to see us use the "nuclear option" to shut them up once and for all and kick their useless, evil, anti-U.S. tails back under the rocks they came from.
And if GWB nominates Gonzalez, or some other half-baked weenie RAT-wannabe, we'll raise hell, too.
You know, I feel GOOD. Enough conservatives spoke out against Miers, and WE WON. And if GWB lost, it's because he was playing on the wrong team to begin with.
SUPER post! Thanks for all the info.
---A handful at FR have opposed Miers nomination since the moment she got it. My own personal impression has been that their impetus was religious affiliation and little else.---
---Back that up with cites, or take it back.---
He's entitled to his opinion!
So, Estrada's no good either?
More in-fighting is EXACTLY what the GOP needs.
Fine, but the conservatives who talk about being "betrayed" by him over the years are talking about a hell of a lot more than just the Miers nomination.
I think W really thought that Miers was a true conservative. He's known her for a while, and she had done good work for him. But I really feel sorry for the person who vetted Miers for the Court. I am pretty confident that the President had no clue about that speech.
Well, what do you think happened? POTUS comes out and says she's firmly pro-life, then it turns out that she made a pro-choice speech where she compared abortion protesters to terrorists, and W says "That's OK, Harriet, don't worry, I hear you're a great bowler." Surely you think more of the President than that!!
