ACLU targets tiny cross on seal (Group takes on town of 500 over 30-year-old image)
World Net Daily ^ | October 25, 2005

Proving it does not discriminate against the size of the municipality it will take to court, the American Civil Liberties Union is locked in a legal battle with a small New Mexico town over a tiny cross on its seal – this after last year forcing the County of Los Angeles to remove a cross from its seal.

After being threatened with a lawsuit should it continue to use the seal, the city of Tijeras, N.M., – with a population of less than 500 – decided to place itself in a David and Goliath conflict with the ACLU to defend the presence of the cross.

In 1973, Tijeras adopted the seal, which was designed to symbolize the history of the town. It includes a conquistador's helmet and sword, a scroll, a desert plant, a fairly large religious symbol (the Native American zia) and a small Christian cross.

"Tiny cross inspectors are not permitted to fret about large non-Christian religious symbols, only undersized Christian ones," commented columnist John Leo about the case.

Since it is such a small town, Tijeras did not have the financial resources to battle the ACLU, so the Alliance Defense Fund, a pro-religious-liberty organization, has agreed to represent the municipality.

"The ACLU is once more specifically targeting a cross while it ignores Native American religious symbols," commented ADF senior counsel Gary McCaleb. "It reveals their desire to target all things Christian, regardless of the fact that the cross in the Tijeras seal is clearly an historic symbol and not an attempt to endorse any particular faith."

Wrote Silas Montgomery, tongue in cheek, in the Arizona Daily Wildcat, referencing the placement of the cross on the seal: "This heinous crime, committed more than 30 years ago, went unpunished until the righteous crusaders from the ACLU took note of it and decided that justice had to be served."

Old L.A. County seal

As WorldNetDaily reported, last year the American Civil Liberties Union, or ACLU, threatened to sue the county if the L.A. County Board of Supervisors did not redesign the seal, leading to a 3-2 vote to remove the small cross. The ACLU claimed it violated the First Amendment of the Constitution.

The Board subsequently voted to approve a new cross-less seal.

There are several crosses on that seal. There's one at the hilt of the sword. There's one that looks more Indian in origin, but it's still a cross, and there's that highly offensive "T" in "Tijeras"!

This thing was like a red flag to the nutcases at the ACLU. Even now they are probably plotting and planning their next lawsuit as they undertake the redesign of this town seal a cross at a time.

We can hear their panting behind the door.

There is a big old native American religious symbol (the "zia" I believe) on the helmet which the bigots at the ACLU of course ignore.

I guess the next targets are Cross Walks, Crossword Puzzles, Cross Pen, Cross Your Heart Bras, Crossonts (jsut to be sure) and Cristropher Cross records.

I'd probably support them on that last one though.

The ACLU needs to be wiped out of existence just like the terrorist they are.

One day when San Diego (KOGO) radio talk-show host Roger Hedgecock was filling in for Rush Limbaugh, he mentioned a new bill in the House of Representatives. That bill would change the law that allows the ACLU (or any other organization) from making money when they lose a case they bring against someone.

Does anyone know what happened to that Congressional bill? It would put the ACLU out of business PRONTO!

I am no longer shocked at the depths to which the ACLU will stoop to in assaulting CHRISTIAN symbols. Their actions go way beyond mere separation of Church and state. This is anti-Christian bigotry, pure and simple.

The SECOND AMENDMENT was written for occassions where the protection of the "govt" was non-existant or the cause of the loss of freedom.

The ACLU and their "MASTERS" had best remember that and tremble.

ACLU is an ATHEIST COMMUNIST organization that seeks to subvert America and her freedom. Eventually there will come a day when ACLU members will be hunted by some individuals from the general public because government will be too afraid to do anything about it. Also because most people are just sitting back and watching it all unfold.

Their name is what they are against; Liberty. They are not for tolerance, but for the complete washing of identity. They are for the advancement of their religion which is communism.

The Secular Jihadists of the ACLU are truly offended by the tiniest mention of the Christian contribution to our country's heritage. A plague upon their house!

I guess Maryland will be next. Not only is the Cross a prominent part of the flag, it is also displayed on the flag pole.

In 1973, Tijeras adopted the seal, which was designed to symbolize the history of the town. It includes a conquistador's helmet and sword, a scroll, a desert plant, a fairly large religious symbol (the Native American zia) and a small Christian cross.

My sense is that all of those symbols were included from the beginning and that it was, therefore, a secular usage of the cross included with other historic items.

I expect the ACLU to lose this one.

A few, short miles away from Kississimmi (home of Disney World)...In St.Cloud, Florida they use to have a cross on their water tower, and the words..."Crossroads to the World".....it was impressive.

The ACLU stuck their big, ugly nose in.....

... and even though the little town went down fighting....they still went down.

There's just an ugly water tower now....and I can't even remember if there's anything on it now, the folks are so scared of lawsuits.

I am surprised they didn't make the good folks of St. Cloud change the name of their town.....

..but, then, of course, they would have to go after, St.Louis and all the other St. named towns of this country :^

The cross at the bottom looks like part of a rosary. Ave Maria!
