Senators reject Miers critics
Senate Republicans yesterday dismissed conservative leaders' adamant opposition to the Supreme Court nomination of Harriet Miers.
"This is absurd," said Sen. Mike DeWine, the Ohio Republican who sits on the Judiciary Committee. "We need to move on to hearings."
"Enough is enough," Mr. DeWine said. "If I pick up one more paper and read about one more group that I've never heard of saying they're for Miers or against Miers -- it just doesn't matter at this point."
Manuel Miranda, who has helped organize much of the opposition to Miss Miers, said this battle will not be forgotten by the Republican base.
"Mike DeWine is going to lose in Ohio, and he should be more aware of grass-roots sentiment," Mr. Miranda said. "Mike DeWine doesn't have a great deal of conservative support in Ohio and ham-fisted remarks aren't going to help with that."
Mr. DeWine said Republican senators facing challengers in the 2006 election -- such as himself -- need not worry that their positions on the nomination will be held against them.
"This is not a factor," he said yesterday. "People are not having a big discussion back in Ohio. It's not a huge issue."

I agree. The pro-Miers people have been annoying and overly sensitive.

Mike De"Winer" is a LIBERAL Republican.
"Enough is enough," Mr. DeWine said. "If I pick up one more paper and read about one more group that I've never heard of . . .
Mike De"Winer" is a LIBERAL Republican. De "Winer" has never heard of prestigious conservative groups because . . .
Mike De"Winer" is a LIBERAL Republican.
Some day, conservative activists will start discriminating by properly labeling LIBERALS and CONSERVATIVES instead of this Sean Hannity style childish DEMOCRATS vs REPUBLICANS crap. The days are over where conservative was associated with Republican. Today, "conservatives" are more accurately associated with RINOs.
Most Republicans are liberals. De "Winer" is a flaming liberal. No wonder he is bitching over the Miers critics.
The only word I have for DeWine is that I hope he enjoys retirement after his last year of service in the United States Senate.
Disengenuous to say the least. In all sincerity, there are bozo's on the anti-Miers side who have been overly sensitive.
I have to hand it to Mike DeWine. He is doing everything possible to alienate everyone who's ever supported him.
Earlier this week he voted against legislation to shield gunmakers from frivilous lawsuits. This is just one of many anti-gun votes he's made over the years. Now he criticizes his own constituents for daring to criticize an underqualified nominee.
Mike DeWine is in serious trouble in 2006. And he only has himself and his many missteps to blame. Like his son, he's arrogantly forgotten about the people who elected him.
"Are the GOP senators really that out of touch?"
Sadly, DeWine is probably right not to worry. There's a reason he and Voinovich are RINOS: That's as close to the right as you can get in Ohio and still win.
Don't forget we still have Dennis Kucinich within our congressional delegation.
This state has had it.
Hey Mike, you might want to read the papers this morning. Good job making yourself look like an idiot, again.
DeWine would have no problems getting re-elected if it weren't for......himself. He'd be better off boarding a plane to Bermuda and staying there through the election than trying to run as the idiot he's become.
Ken Blackwell has been elected 3 times statewide. And when Mike DeWine was first elected to the Senate he had a conservative record and reputation. Since then he's turned into a RINO and is in serious danger of getting bounced out of office. DeWine would have been better off staying conservative.
Exactly right, this RINO will get pitched in favor of a real conservative the first chance we get!
From a Browns / Buckeye Fan!
Yeah, Blackwell is our best "up and comer" here.
