What Rice Can't See
The Washington Post ^ | 10/25/2005 | Eugene Robinson

Posted on 10/25/2005 11:16:46 PM PDT by dolphin558

....Like a lot of African Americans, I've long wondered what the deal was with Condoleezza Rice and the issue of race. How does she work so loyally for George W. Bush, whose approval rating among blacks was measured in a recent poll at a negligible 2 percent? How did she come to a worldview so radically different from that of most black Americans? Is she blind, is she in denial, is she confused -- or what?......

Mr. Robinson,

As a starter, for whatever its worth, I too am African American. Judging by your article if Ms. Rice ran for President she would lose soundly among blacks because:

1. She doesn't hire enough blacks to her staff. 2. She has a different worldview than the vast majority of blacks. 3. She has chosen to not segregate herself from the larger "American society". 4. She was insulated from racism and does not harp on its associated ills, past and present.

Granted, you mention nothing of her running for President but my scenario brings up a larger point of this perception among many blacks that Ms. Rice is not "black enough". MLK would have been appalled. Here is a woman who has achieved the I Have a Dream dream and because she appears to be 'colorblind' she is maligned by her own people. Now, being colorblind is nothing wrong. It simply means she does not filter the world through the lens of racism and prejudice. She doesn't live a life where she is constantly conscious of her race and whether Johnny is racist. There is SURELY a need to be cognizant of racism and especially her heritage. But does that mean she can't identify herself as an American first? Does she have to act as if racism is as prevalent as it was 50 years ago? Does she lose some of her blackness if her Chief of Staff is Italian? Who are you or anybody to determine what her outlook and worldview should be? Does she lose points because she is fluent in Russian and not Swahili? I'm confused, on paper she would seem like a role model for black girls everywhere but if she's not black......

Excellent post,

If MLK was alive today he would be definitely appalled. MLK was a true leader of a movement that would denounce what he is seeing today in the NAACP and race baiter's like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. MLK was all about self reliance and the DIGNITY that comes with it, Sharpton and Jackson are all about Victim-hood, and how the White Man is too blame.

I can't understand why that guy can't live up to everybody else's expectations of what he ought to be doing with his life.

He could have been somebody important and influential -- instead of how he turned out to be.

I guess freedom isn't for everyone.

Forty years later, Rice shows no bitterness

She learned how to fish and refused to wait for the hand out.

One would think that with all the affirmative action aid he's gotten over his lifetime, he'd be at least Mayor of Washington D.C. by now -- instead of still working for the Man at the Washington Post.

What Rice Can See.........is through the Democratic Party and "the promise lands" she now lives on by leaving the plantation.

Condi's problem is that she is also a Republican

More than that, a black Republican delegated to such high stature that she can shape future world events.

If she was a Democrat .. she would be praised to the high heavens for all that she has achieved

If she were a Democrat she'd be praised with shrines built by Farrakhan and Jesse Jackson.
