Nine seasons of crude comedy
Communist News Network (CNN) ^ | 25 October 2005 | APee

NEW YORK (AP) -- With the political relevance of "The Daily Show" and the huge DVD sales (and subsequent hiatus) of "Chappelle's Show," it's easy to forget about that other Comedy Central show, "South Park."

But Matt Stone and Trey Parker's crude cartoon began its ninth season last Wednesday -- and it remains the network's most-watched program. It is also, perhaps, still the most manic thing on TV, with entire episodes created just days before they air.

With a ripped-from-the-headlines approach, it's the "Law & Order" of comedy. The first episode, "Two Days Before the Day After Tomorrow," tackles Hurricane Katrina -- by way of the neighboring town flooding.

Parker, who turned 36 last week, and Stone, 34, last month inked a deal for three more seasons and "South Park" has begun appearing in syndication in some markets -- both of which assure the world of Cartman, Stan, Kyle and the rest will continue to expand.

Maybe so...the episode I saw was about mexican gardners ala "Desperate Housewives" and several other mostly-mexican related skits. But, hey, the jokes are funny...

I'm not saying that Foxworthy and Ingvall aren't funny, but they've both been living on the same thing for years. "You Might Be a Redneck" and "Here's Your Sign" have gotten a little stale after all this time. The reason I like Tater Salad and Git'er Done is that they never fail to find a new way to either offend, or gross you out.

One of the reasons Trey and Matt have been so successful over the years is that they are always willing to take on the established, PC norms. "Team America" was an absolute riot because it poked fun at Muslim extremists, Hollywood, and liberalism in general.

I grew tired of Chappelle's cheap race humor by episode 2..... Highly overrated. South Park is still the yard stick against which any show on Comedy Central must be judged.

"Right you are, Ken".

We used to ahve a security guard at work named Ken who liked that show. Each time I passed the security station, he and I would riff the common one-liners from that show.

"Say Ken, who's that new guy?"
"Oh, he's the newest employee - makes Day Vision Goggles for the military."

Are they making new shows? I hope they never run out of clips from that original Japanese show :)

Timmerman must die is the best SP episode ever, I think.

Although a close second would be the Xmas episode with Jesus and Santa. It was _so well_ constructed. A lot of their episodes are well constructed. It makes me not want to be able to try to write a TV show unless I could write as well as that.

The OLD Man Show, with Jimmy Kimmel and Adam Carolla. There's a station on our system that is re-running them -- I forgot how absolutely INSANE the Fox was.

The lame-assed one with Joe Rogan and Doug Stanhope was a faint echo of the original.

Barbaric fare for useful idiots. I can't believe they're syndicating it for broadcast TV at just 11:30 pm.

I understand that the syndicated versions are highly edited. In fact, some episodes won't even be shown in syndication because the editing required would leave nothing remaining. :)
