The worst deer-hunting country in California is right in our own backyard on a near impenetrable stretch of land in the San Gabriel Mountains. For hunters, it's an irresistible challenge.
The day before the deer season opener earlier this month, Arl Farris is scaling a 45-degree slope heading up a 6,250-foot high ridge in the San Gabriel Mountains. Ahead is a gantlet of disintegrating granite, overhead chaparral and thorn bushes that snap his face as he presses through. Behind is a valley of pines and broken cliffs and fog as lovely as an Ansel Adams photo.
Footing is very unstable, but Farris, a longtime hunter and former San Marino police chief, knows this shaky terrain. He moves up the ridge in seamless methodical motion, relying on momentum to keep him from falling backward onto boulders and yucca. From the top, near Mt. Baldy, the 45-year-old hunter can see vast distances and scout for deer he hopes to shoot the next day. It's a needle-in-a-haystack proposition because Farris is in the middle of the worst deer-hunting country in California.

Here in Minnesota, there are so many darned deer that lots of cities in the metro area have bowhunting in the city parks. Permit only, of course, and just a few hunters allowed.
A nice buck wandered through my backyard a couple of days ago, and I live in St. Paul, itself.
For some reason, most folks here don't have fences around their yards, so the wildlife just passes through the yards.
One of them sorry Bambi looking pieces of crap almost got me the other night on the motorcycle, I had a handful of front brake the front wheel was locked up and I just squeeked through, I hope they kill every stinking one of them in the state. All they do is eat, crap and commit suicide by jumping out in front of cars.
You can hunt from less than 20 miles from Manhattan in the NW most area of Bergen County NJ and East most Passaic county..

forfeits the opportunity to harvest an antlered deer during the
Permit Shotgun Season. Only one buck may be taken at a time.

one deer – which MUST be antlerless if two antlered deer were
harvested during the Six-Day Firearm Season (see Note above).

Agreed to the 10th degree. I shoot 'em whenever I see 'em. But I've always lived in the country. I hate venison so I make a few phone calls to my venison-loving friends. Or drag 'em down to the lake, tie a cinder block on 'em and take 'em out to deep water.
More and more urban areas are allowing limited bowhuntng in parks, etc. It is necessary to prevent the human/animal conflicts.
These morally and intellectually superior (they think) liberal AR idiots are starting to realize an overpopulation of deer can cause lots of problems, eating their expensive shrubs and landscaping to the ground, Lymes disease from the deer ticks, and deaths from automobile/human crashes.
When the problem starts eating into their pocketbooks, they surprisingly decide their principles are for sale. Anything can be bought, including their silly AR principles.
I had to deal with one of these types a few years ago when working for a hunting/fishing magazine (which her family owned a percentage of) and she was a card-carrying member of PETA. She had been a typesetter and married the president of the company.
To keep up with the other women in her new social status she had to find a cause to contribute to, and chose PETA, HSUS, all of these.
Twice she tried to get me fired from my company because she didn't like the editorials I'd written spelling out how these organizations do nothing but raise money and pay big salaries, but nothing for animals.
After I'd given my notice I was leaving the company she wrote my boss blasting me about such an article. She also questioned my creditials as a reporter.
I emailed her back and reminded her that her family didn't mind making money off these activities, even as she continued to be anti hunting/fishing. Then I reminded her that I EARNED my creditials, unlike her, who slept her way into her position.
When she couldn't dispute the documented FACTS I had in my article, she resorted to name calling.
So, I copied her snide and unprofessional remarks to me and sent them to the president of the company. After that they managed to muzzle her mouth so she couldn't make a fool of them anymore.
I don't know if it would be considered 'major', but you can hunt along the Savannah River in Augusta, Ga. There are a number of hunt clubs on old agricultural land and hunters are allowed on and around the levee. It's not populated by houses, there are a few industries around but downtown is only a 5 minute or less drive away.

The same area is open to rifle hunting.
One of my friends just durn near lost a brand-new pickemup truck to one of these beasties. He's fine but having a bleeding deer corpse in your front seat is sort of a life-changing experience. I told him he needed a bigger truck.
