LBJ's legacy of the "War on Poverty" lives on. Over 6 TRILLION taxpayer dollars has been poured into the bottomless pit of programs for the "poor", and as is true to form, you always get more of whatever the government subsidizes. The Ninth Ward in NO is a monument to LBJ's program of paying for votes with other people's money.
If you knew more about the debt situation, you would know that Bush is being honest and forthright with spending.
Clinton (who I guess you love based on your remark) borrowed from other accounts (such as Social Security) to "balance the budget".
Bush inherited a mess, bound to increase the debt - unless he was dishonest like the other party.
What's your problem? Go back to DU.
At the beginning of Clinton's term (1/20/93) the national debt was $4,188,092,107,183.60. When he left office (1/19/2001) the debt was $5,727,776,738,304.64.
When GWB took office (1/20/2001) the national debt was $5,728,195,796,181.57. As of 10/21/2005 the debt is $8,009,131,433,464.30.
Clinton benefitted from the peace dividend, drastically reducing defense expenditures and he didn't fight the WOT, which gave us 9/11. Katrina will also add to the national debt.
:) Yeah..... or you just say... for the next 2 years.... we send no more money abroad. It's nothin' personal... we're just trying to become fiscally responsible. And btw... all debt owed by the US government (except to citizens of the US or US corporations) is here by erased. That'd shake things up :)
The national debt increased significantly under Reagan. On 12/31/1980 the debt was $930,210,000,000.00 On 09/30/1988 the national debt was $2,602,337,712,041.16 or almost triple when he took office.
Would that a supposedly conservative congress would do something about it. I expect Democrats to be fiscally irresponsible but its very disappointing when our reps show themselves to be no better. Fiscal conservatism is dead and has been supplanted by big government conservatism.

I have read a little on it, but not enough to know if the system is as wonderful as they claim. Does anyone know if the Fair Tax can fix the deficit and Social security as they claim it can?
I was being sarcastic with my "I love conservatism" comment. I truly do love the idea of a conservate government. Unfortunately this is not what we have now..
Real conservatism would of course actually mean trying to CONSERVE a few taxpayer dollars here and there. A conservative president would have the courage to VETO at least one piece of legislation over his term(s).
The truth is that thousands of pork-filled spending bills have made it past his desk of the past six years, and neither Bush nor the GOP congress has found anything in our $2.6 trillion budget that we could live without.
Sure, you can point to a few "reductions" in the smount of GROWTH (the department of education "only" grew 9% last year instead of 11% previously, etc)...but is this really a victory for conservatism?
When it becomes 8 brazilin i willl worry
Yet, if each of the 9,000,000 millionaires in the US wrote the US treasury a check for $1,000,000, this would be paid off with a trillion dollars left over.
