It could be worse... Republicans could be claiming to have paid down the national debt and produced a surplus.
Instead, all we have is some very honest debt that isn't going to go away until we either out grow it through productivity, or inflate it away.

And don't forget the unfunded social security liability (debt). Too bad someone doesn't try to get a handle on that monstrosity.

Lets remember the unfunded pension liabilities, too.
And hey, there's that whole 40 acres and a mule reparations thing that was never paid, either...

Crank up those printing presses !!! We gotta pay-off that debt created out of nothing.

No need to worry... Some future 'Rat administration will look at the books, and determine that there was a plus/minus sign mistake, and there is really a surplus of 8, 000, 000, 000, 000 .

Just remember, it's only a debt if you intend to repay it back.

My father hated FDR. He used to rail against what he started. "We're a few hundred billion in debt" with no intention of ever paying it off, he used to say.

Americathon (1979 movie)
In the not too distant future, the United States government is virtually bankrupt and in danger of being foreclosed on by a group of Native Americans, now owners of the massive Nike Corporation. A desperate President decides to make a last-ditch effort to save the country... by raising money with a telethon!
This is the not to distant future, right?

Immigrants who have never worked a day in their life in the U.S., can go to their embassy, and file for full benefits with their work history from their own country.
Amazing why the Social Security system is failing...
Would have never guessed.
