David Frum's Diary for October 24, 2005: NEXT STEP
National Review ^ | October 24, 2005 | David Frum

Posted on 10/24/2005 6:03:59 PM PDT by Cautor

The campaign to urge the withdrawal of Harriet Miers has moved to the next level. Two new groups have stepped forward: WithdrawMiers.org (http://www.withdrawmiers.org/) is a consortium of social conservative groups that will encourage members to write directly to their representatives in Congress.

Some friends of mine and I meanwhile have organized Americans for Better Justice (http://www.betterjustice.com/default.php?page_id=1) which has raised money for a national television and radio advertising campaign to urge the withdrawal of the nomination of Harriet Miers. You will be able to see our spots very shortly on the site. They will be airing this week on "Special Report with Brit Hume," "Fox and Friends," the Rush Limbaugh program, the Laura Ingraham program, among other places.

[snip]

There is a very great deal at stake. The seat to which the president has nominated Harriet Miers has been the court's swing seat on a range of issues from same-sex marriage to racial gerrymandering, from religious liberty to federalism. It is too important to be shrugged off - and it is reckless to suggest (as some of my email correspondents are suggesting) that this is a job that can be done by pretty much anybody with a tablespoon of common sense. On the contrary, reversing 4 decades of bad jurisprudence will take very uncommon levels of courage, ability, integrity, and independence. Conservatives have worked too hard for too long to settle for anything less than our very best on the Supreme Court. Please join me and BetterJustice.com in pressing the president to reconsider and do better.

When the subject is YOU, I am happy to remain clueless.

You're not a leader in any sense -- you just parrot the pundits and call it original thought. LOL!

Victimhood belongs to democrats. Proud of your selfie?

Disagreeing with the President and Miers supporters is bashing? LOL! What an intellectually dishonest and unfair charge.

My reference to being attacked has nothing to so with the Miers debate.

Though I view the attacks like the one you initiated above, as grossly unfair and calculated to shut people up, I am personally not hurt by them.

I had thought, however, YOU were more mature than that.

He has, and just how does Frum advocate the abandonment of the Constitutional process of appointing judges? I want a full explanation too, or at least the "ConLaw Made Simple" version.

He's abusing the 1st amendment by influencing people to write their Senators to reject the Meirs appointment!!! The 1st amendment only protects pornography. /sarc

No he hasn't broken his promise. Until Miers gets her hearing, you can't prove that as fact that he has broken his promise.

The hearings are merely a political kubuki dance. The goal of the nominee is to say as little as possible. A nominee's record is a fact, what they say in a hearing is largely BS. None of us know what Ms. Stealth will do on the court until she's already confirmed and casting votes. I don't like pigs in a poke.

Not quite. It's how you conduct yourself toward others that makes the difference. I'm not hurt by it, but it reflects poorly on you alone.

Though I view the attacks like the one you initiated above, as grossly unfair and calculated to shut people up, I am personally not hurt by them.

My posts are neither calculated or grossly unfair or designed to shut people up. If your not personally hurt by them, then I don't see what your problem is with me.

I was way ahead of the pundits, taking my stand the day after the nomination, and posting my reasons, as I usually am.

You however, have been making the same arguments as the Bush administration and the other's who just can't bring themselves to think for themselves and disagree with the President.

I was just commenting today, that you couldn't pay me enough to follow the talking points of any adminstration. And people like you do it for nothing. : )

I had thought, however, YOU were more mature than that.

You've obviously invested too much into one story, you've taken it upon yourself to thrust your personal life into the lives of complete strangers on the internet of all places.

Doesn't wash. 42 Republicans voted for Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

Oh goodie for you --- way ahead of the pundits. FOTFLOL!

Thanks for proving you're nothing more than an emotional reactionary.

Don't let facts cloud your judgement.

Just slam the nominee before any of us have had the chance to hear her.

LOL!

You're hilarious and so self centered to make the threads about poor, victim YOU!

"Sure she does. We all do. She has a set of ideas or beliefs, just like any other living breathing human being.

Good, nominate me. What, you wouldn't? I live, I breathe.

No, I hardly know ye. Unlike the President who's known Miers for over a decade.

Your criteria appears to be living and breathingand having a set of ideas and beliefs. We all do. You set the bar much too low, and hence that is why you support Harriet Miers.

You've got it backwards.

A general reamark is hardly thrusting my personal life on the internet. You're getting quite hyperbolic.

"You've obviously invested too much into one story"

Just like the Liberals, you accuse others of what you yourself do. You've been on every single Miers thread I've been on and then some. However, I never suggested you invested yourself too much in one story. The way I see it, you're free to get on whatever thread you like and so am I.

I was wrong. You're not mature. You play the same silly games as the Liberals. I'll keep that in mind.

That would be? Thought so, you couldn't come up with proof to back up that.

You've been on every single Miers thread I've been on and then some. However, I never suggested you invested yourself too much in one story.

I know, I haven't. You on the other hand have. The way I see it, you're free to get on whatever thread you like and so am I.

That is basically the definition of judicial philosophy.

"Thanks for proving you're nothing more than an emotional reactionary."

Your posts on this thread speak for themselves.

We will learn precious more about Miss Miers than we already know. That's the whole object of the hearings. The nominee reveals as little about themselves as possible in order to get confirmed.

All the hearings in the world will not change Miss Miers lack of Judicial and Consitutional experience or the fact that she has no conserative credentials. And by then, if the Democrats decide they want her there will be little anyone else can do about it.

Thank God most conservatives are smart enough to know it and do something about it NOW.

LOL! You get sillier with each post.

Judicial experience is not a prerequisite. Do you not know the Constitution?

Right now, prior to her hearing, I am THRILLED she's not coming from the bench -- and thus far I am thrilled she's not a "scholar" because lofty justices have found "privacy rights" that only they can.

Common sense and a grasp of the law would be refreshing.
