David Frum's Diary for October 24, 2005: NEXT STEP
National Review ^ | October 24, 2005 | David Frum

Posted on 10/24/2005 6:03:59 PM PDT by Cautor

The campaign to urge the withdrawal of Harriet Miers has moved to the next level. Two new groups have stepped forward: WithdrawMiers.org (http://www.withdrawmiers.org/) is a consortium of social conservative groups that will encourage members to write directly to their representatives in Congress.

Some friends of mine and I meanwhile have organized Americans for Better Justice (http://www.betterjustice.com/default.php?page_id=1) which has raised money for a national television and radio advertising campaign to urge the withdrawal of the nomination of Harriet Miers. You will be able to see our spots very shortly on the site. They will be airing this week on "Special Report with Brit Hume," "Fox and Friends," the Rush Limbaugh program, the Laura Ingraham program, among other places.

[snip]

There is a very great deal at stake. The seat to which the president has nominated Harriet Miers has been the court's swing seat on a range of issues from same-sex marriage to racial gerrymandering, from religious liberty to federalism. It is too important to be shrugged off - and it is reckless to suggest (as some of my email correspondents are suggesting) that this is a job that can be done by pretty much anybody with a tablespoon of common sense. On the contrary, reversing 4 decades of bad jurisprudence will take very uncommon levels of courage, ability, integrity, and independence. Conservatives have worked too hard for too long to settle for anything less than our very best on the Supreme Court. Please join me and BetterJustice.com in pressing the president to reconsider and do better.

Correction, Frum has dual citizenship. Nonetheless, he's turned into ass clown.

Thanks for the correction and the additional info. I'd heard that Frum was toying with public office in Canada. Dual citizenship would explain why that is still feasible.

Personally I don't care what Rush thinks or feels, it's you that I have an issue with. You've firmly placed yourself in the "unqualified, Bush toady, donut fetching, 3rd rate college attending, crony" camp with your outrageous irrelevant nonsense from "day one".

Moving the goal posts huh?

Please point out any post where I have ever mention anything about donut fetching, 3rd rate college, Bush toady or anything like that.

As I have explained, I am not in favor of the nomination due to her lack of a track record. I want to see evidence that she is not an judicial activist. It's just too big of a risk.

Probably because you're confused by your own posts.

Huh? You and two others said that I was wrong when I wrote that Rush was originally against the nomination. I never said anything about Rush wanting Miers to withdraw. You guys introduced that, not me.

Me: "The fact that Rush was originally against the nomination speaks volumes."
You and two others: "You are wrong, Rush was split from day one."
I post quotes from Rush on day one where he said he was disappointed with the pick and claimed that it was made from weakness.
You and two others: "See you are wrong! He wants the process to go to the end"
Me: "I never said Rush wanted the nomination withdrawn."
You: "You are confused"

To be clear, I am against the nomination because she doesn't have a judicial track record....

We got lucky, really lucky, with Rhenquist. Why roll the dice?

Don't forget that both Thomas and Roberts were on the bench for about a year. Both had very little judicial track records.

BTW, the president is not relying on luck when he picked Miers. He knows Miers. It's you and I who must guess.

He has no idea how Miers will do on the bench. She has never been a judge so he has no way to know.

I have always and will continue to openly disagree with whomever is in office Republican or Democrat, Liberal or Conservative. Disagreeing is not attacks and venom.

Except for rare occasions my finest and most biting attacks will be reserved for Liberals and those espousing Liberal opinions. That's the way it has been, IS and the way it will be no matter what you or anyone on this forum or elsewhere throws my way. I will oppose anyone Republican or Democrat who stands in the way of the conservative agenda.

BTW, I have heard Rush strongly condemn Republicans upon occasion. He's been no less measured about it than many of us have been on this one.

Personally, I've endured FAR, FAR worse than anything Miss Miers has endured throughout this process for my beliefs and standing up for them from vicious people who sought to "learn me some lessons."

What people who oppose the Miers nomination have done, pales in comparison to what has been done to me. And those involved in going after me are going to pay a very high price, if not in this world, when they stand before almighty God, for their colossal nerve and utter gall.

Have you seen the questionaire?

My God, you have managed to be the ultimate victim.
As though this nomination is all about you.

Take a rest from this.

One year later, and it's like it's an all-or-nothing proposition for some of you. You had your chances last year to make a "lifelong difference", and here you sat on your collective fingers doing jack.

You're acting like a priss. Many of us anti-Mierites spent time and money to facilitate the election of Bush and a Republican congress. Bush stated he would appoint judges like Scalia and Thomas. Bush broke his promise. If you want to be a BOHICA Bush-bot that is your right. However, I'll pass on the yaya Bush circle jerk.

Have you seen the questionaire?

That's the whole point - it's just a questionnaire. People embellish and say what hiring managers want to hear all the time.

What is important is actual performance. Will anyone really say that they are lazy if asked on a questionnaire for a job? No, but there are tons of lazy workers out there.

Past performance is by far the best indicator of employee performance and tendencies. Miers doesn't have a track record to scrutinize.

Most likely he knows her Constitutional philosophy very well.

BTW, the president has an excellent track record in picking judges and she has been highly involved in the those selection processes.

Miers is an unknown. You don't know if Bush has broken his promise.

I obviously wasn't just referring just to this nomination, but then you knew that.

I suggest you take a rest from lecturing others about when they should speak out and when they shouldn't and when they should take a rest.

And frankly, you haven't a clue, bless your heart.

Reread yor post dear.
You posted about abuse you think you're receiving here,
yet you're one of the lead bashers of Miers.

You do need a rest when you have made this thread about poor, picked on you.

You wrote: "I obviously wasn't just referring just to this nomination, but then you knew that. "

No, I do not have any idea to which you're speaking.

No he hasn't broken his promise. Until Miers gets her hearing, you can't prove that as fact that he has broken his promise.

I'm bored.
All so repetitive.

The woman deserves her hearing.
Let her fail or fly.
It's all about the process.
NOT the pre-hearing rants and blood sport.

I cannot imagine being the nominee in this environment.

Many of us anti-Mierites spent time and money to facilitate the election of Bush and a Republican congress.

Big deal. Many Democrats did the same thing. John O'Neill of Swift Boat fame and Zell Miller are two that come to mind.

Me neither. I guess Harriet Miers has more guts than the two of us.

"yet you're one of the lead bashers of Miers."

I am a proud critic of the nomination. Hardly a basher. And if I am one of the leaders, I see that as a compliment and wear that badge with honor.

Calling a fellow conservative, Republican and freeper a name? Tsk, tsk, tsk (shaking head). You are violating one of your own principles. : )

"No, I do not have any idea to which you're speaking.

Yes, I know as I said you're clueless, bless your heart.

Playing victim and trying to garner sympathy is pretty pathetic albeit amusing, in spite of the fact you've spent an inordinate amount of time bashing this president, his nominee, and those who don't see things the way you do.
