Tomorrow moring we will begin to see overview damage reports. Comprehensive reports for the most easily accessed areas will still probably take another 24 to 48 hours.

Early recognizance of black hole areas where no word is getting out may make a significant difference to the people in them's well being. Jeb probably has a very good handle on the concept already, but there's no harm in backstopping even an able effort.

Right now, I have a black hole all around Lake Okeechobee, another one all along the east coast, starting up at Daytona, and running all the way down to black hole number three, the Keys. Small towns in and near the Everglades probably represent black hole number four.

You folks that know Florida a lot better than me can probably do a much better job of refining the extent of the dark areas, once we starting getting anything more than isolated anecdotal reports.

In the meantime, it's dark, I'm due for an 8 hour nap, and a decent meal, so I'll be back in the morning.

I'd use firring strips to hold the tarp down. Staples will just pull through with any wind

I know...guess it helps to turn the temporary pumps ON!

Temporary pumps set up near the Industrial Canal by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers were not turned on Sunday. Groundwater that had collected at pumping station no. 5, ruined by Hurricane Katrina, seeped into the streets, said Stewart Waits, project manager of the Corps' Task Force on Watering.

Water rose last night in the 9th Ward....

I am sure it is Bush's fault...

Ninth Ward floods for the third time

Up to one foot of water crept into parts of the Lower Ninth Ward overnight Sunday and into Monday morning, once again flooding Florida Avenue and parts of Jourdan Avenue.

"It collects and it shows up on the streets," Waits said Monday. "I'm hoping it's a one-time occurrence. We'll have to monitor it."

"Have you heard from your Fort Lauderdale family yet?"

Yes, (thank you for asking). I was finally able to get through to their land line this evening..cell phone service is out. Everyone is ok...my parents had to evac from their manufactured home community, and will try to get back in the morning, with hopes that their property is ok. My folks are fed up..Mom says she is getting OUT of FL as soon as they can sell out. (they've been there over 30 years). She's tired of pack & evac. Hope all FL Freepers are ok.

Regards,

I used to have four tarps. Donated one from the cache, and bought two more for the folks who lost their roofs during Charley.

LOL - I never even owned a tarp until last summer. Now I have a cache too. I've found they come in handy for so many things. I started using them for yard work while raking up tree debris and leaves. I always look for them on sale now.

Thanks for that info .. yes, roofing is not rocket science but it is a highly regulated industry in Florida. Last year, Florida restricted the sale of roofing materials to licensed contractors only. Some grumbling but the regulation stuck. A building permit was required (but free; the fee was waived) and an inspection was required. The government, insurers, and industry did everything possible to lock out competition and make sure servicable roofs were the outcome.

We lucked out with the rain as well. It took more than a month to get the blue roof but it pretty much stayed dry the whole time. Coincidence or weather pattern shift after a big one passes through?

Glad this thing is out of Florida and that it looks like most made it thru relatively OK. Prayers for FReepers that haven't checked in yet. With the power outages, it's going to be a hard time for lots of folks.

And I am worried about all those people in Key West too.

I talked to my friend about an hour ago. Amazingly, he still has all his utilities.

Some of the shingles on his roof went south for the winter, and his bass boat turned completely around in the back yard, and the boat cover came off. Other than that, he's in good shape.

Oh, and both his cactus disappeared from the front and back yards totally...roots and all.

"There is no Operation Blue Roof in Florida at this time."

Check again tomorrow, I'd be surpirsed if they didn't get it up and running for this storm.

Agree, the tarps come in handy for a variety of chores. A bit heavy to use as a paint drop cloth, perfect when building materials are stacked in the driveway with a t-storm moving into the area.
