I received scattered applause, but it was nothing compared to the rousing response that went to another panelist – Raul Yzaguirre, former president of the National Council of La Raza – when he said that he didn't like the term "illegal immigrant" because he didn't think that people who came to this country to feed their families should be considered criminals.

Thanks to the libs and Bush.

I'm shocked. That was an excellent response. Here's another one: simply go back to your home country and enroll your children in college, while you apply to come here legally.

Whether they can go to college is the least of their worries. I don't care if the children are honor students, they can be picked up and deported at any time. And now, unless there are substantial legislative changes – like the enactment of the federal Dream Act championed by Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, which would allow illegal immigrant students to attend college – there is not much any of us can do for these children.

Another GOP sell-out to ILLEGAL immigration.

The word is out that some illegals come here, not to work, but to visit relatives living in the United States. At the end of their visit, they will turn themselves in to the government so they can get a free ticket home.

There is one fact few have mentioned. Without some sort of punishment of the illegals, the illegal immigration problem will never go away. I propose a 10 year sentence of indentured servitude to the United States Government. The government can then "rent" out the illegals to private businesses for, say, $10-15 per hour, to pay the expense of enforcing the illegal immigration laws. When their sentence if over, the illegals will be sent back to their country of origin. Businessmen who hire illegals directly (not from the government) will receive the same sentence as the illegals.

Exodus 22:21
"Do not mistreat an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in Egypt."

Exodus 23:9
"Do not oppress an alien; you yourselves know how it feels to be aliens, because you were aliens in Egypt."

Illegal immigrants are criminals

Sorry to play games, but there is an important definitional distinction. Criminals are folks convicted of violations of the criminal code, which is usually things like murder, rape, armed robbery, burglary, etc.

There are also civil codes providing for sanctions for things ranging from leaving your garbage cans out on the street after pickup to parking tickets, breaking securities regulations to entering the country without proper documentation. Breaking these is illegal to various degrees, but does not make one a "criminal."

It is an important distinction because, as Giuliani pointed out when he cleaned up New York, the the foremost function of the police should be enforcement of the criminal code, and civil stuff comes lower on the rung of priorities. It is hard though when people get more incensed about people overstaying their time in parking meters than they do about assaulting old ladies to steal their social security money.

The solution seems obvious. Either the illegal immigrants can follow the laws of the US and become legal immigrants or they can be deported. I am not against immigration and know that many of the immigrants who came here illegally do work and simply want a better life for themselves and family. But the fact remains the US has procedures, policies and laws in place for those who want to come into the United States. If those are not followed the immigrant has violated the laws of the US and is a criminal. We are the most generous nation in the world and welcome people of every creed, race and nation. But if someone can not respect the law in coming here they can not expect a carte blanche welcome. If you want to be here follow our laws.

Some states also require that undocumented immigrant students pay exorbitantly high out-of-state tuition rates . . ."

The same rates as other U.S. citizens who live outside that state. If there's so much angst about this, then mandate the same fees to ALL applicants. Instead, we have the outrageous situation in some states that illegal aliens get a cheaper rate than citizens from out of state.

Doesn't The Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment come into play somewhere along the line here? It must not or someone would have sued - and lost.

So, Raul Yzaguirre, former president Grand Imperial Wizard of the National Council of La Raza doesn't like the term "illegal immigrant". Ain't that just too bad.

It's always amused me (but not in a funny way) that people who refuse to call illegal aliens what they are might want to call bank robbers "undocumented bank customers" or some such nonsense.

It started when a woman who identified herself as a teacher asked what she was supposed to tell parents (who were illegal immigrants) about why their children (who were also here illegally) couldn't go to college or apply for financial aid, even after they had worked hard and earned good grades.

Tell them to GO HOME! What I would really like to tell them would get me a 'time out'. Why should anyone pay for ILLEGALS to go to college when there are LEGAL citizens who would also like the same benefits?!!! As if they haven't already gotten more than they SHOULD HAVE from the TAXPAYERS!
