The same principle applies to the subject that the audience really wanted to talk about above all others: illegal immigration. And it was during that discussion that reality went out the window.
It started when a woman who identified herself as a teacher asked what she was supposed to tell parents (who were illegal immigrants) about why their children (who were also here illegally) couldn't go to college or apply for financial aid, even after they had worked hard and earned good grades.
You see, typically, the pursuit of higher education requires a valid Social Security number, which illegal immigrants don't have. Some states also require that undocumented immigrant students pay exorbitantly high out-of-state tuition rates, even if they and their families have lived in that particular state and paid taxes for years.
My answer to the question shocked some in the mostly Latino audience: Tell the parents they made a terrible mistake when they came into the country illegally, and that they compounded that mistake every day that they stayed here without legal documentation.

He's a good columnist, this is no sudden conversion.
My impression of Navarette is that he generally puts being a good American ahead of being pro-Hispanic.

Anybody hear an echo?
Thanks to the libs and Bush.
Really? Our administration doesn't think so, they refer to them as "undocumented workers", well no actually they are CRIMINALS!
I'm shocked. That was an excellent response. Here's another one: simply go back to your home country and enroll your children in college, while you apply to come here legally.
*Gasp!* Did he say that? He can't say that!
I am labeled by people like this almost daily. Mainly the leftist women that attend the same college as me.
I'll say something like:
"Wow, have you guys seen the news lately? Those Texas landowners on the border are screwed! They've worked their whole lives to build these ranches and now they're worthless! They can't give them away! Illegal immigrants have destroyed what these people worked their WHOLE LIVES to build!"
"But they're PEOPLE too!" "You're such a jerk!"
Usually it takes me a minute of stunned silence to even BEGIN to form a response, as I'm stunned with my mouth hanging open that anyone could be such an idiot and still be attending an institution of higher education. And then I realize that there are more of them here than me. Then I usually walk away, because I realize that if they'll use an argument that doesn't pertain to the discussion in one place, they'll do it in every other place too. I think next time they ask me what I think about the war or about social security, etc., I'm just going to pre-empt this and respond with "You're such a jerk!".
I am a little surprised he wasn't tarred and feathered.
Another GOP sell-out to ILLEGAL immigration.
"Which would allow illegal immigrant students to attend college"
What that really means:
"Which would allow his constituents to both pay for their children to go to college, and also for illegal immigrant children to go to college."
The word is out that some illegals come here, not to work, but to visit relatives living in the United States. At the end of their visit, they will turn themselves in to the government so they can get a free ticket home.
There is one fact few have mentioned. Without some sort of punishment of the illegals, the illegal immigration problem will never go away. I propose a 10 year sentence of indentured servitude to the United States Government. The government can then "rent" out the illegals to private businesses for, say, $10-15 per hour, to pay the expense of enforcing the illegal immigration laws. When their sentence if over, the illegals will be sent back to their country of origin. Businessmen who hire illegals directly (not from the government) will receive the same sentence as the illegals.
Truth is illegal immigrants suddenly being given legal status is the only thing that's going to save the Demogue Party. They just can't win elections anymore unles they find new, large numbers of citizens who will vote to redistribute wealth to them.
THAT is what this is all about.
Exodus 22:21
"Do not mistreat an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in Egypt."
Exodus 23:9
"Do not oppress an alien; you yourselves know how it feels to be aliens, because you were aliens in Egypt."
Sorry to play games, but there is an important definitional distinction. Criminals are folks convicted of violations of the criminal code, which is usually things like murder, rape, armed robbery, burglary, etc.
There are also civil codes providing for sanctions for things ranging from leaving your garbage cans out on the street after pickup to parking tickets, breaking securities regulations to entering the country without proper documentation. Breaking these is illegal to various degrees, but does not make one a "criminal."
It is an important distinction because, as Giuliani pointed out when he cleaned up New York, the the foremost function of the police should be enforcement of the criminal code, and civil stuff comes lower on the rung of priorities. It is hard though when people get more incensed about people overstaying their time in parking meters than they do about assaulting old ladies to steal their social security money.
We're not talking about mistreating or oppressing aliens. We're talking about giving them a choice: go through the legal channels for citizenship so that you can pay INTO the services that you already DRAW OUT OF, or go back to your own country.
Show me a bible verse that says something to the effect of
"Fund the aliens' social programs so that they don't have to follow the law"
Then I'll jump onboard with you wholeheartedly.
"Truth is illegal immigrants suddenly being given legal status is the only thing that's going to save the Demogue Party. They just can't win elections anymore unles they find new, large numbers of citizens who will vote to redistribute wealth to them.
THAT is what this is all about."
Then why, pray tell, is George W. Bush so gung-ho on an amnesty for illegals? Inquiring minds want to know.
Bush wants amnesty for illegals because his pro-business supporters want cheap labor with no hassles and little or no benefits, with fake S.S. numbers so whatever taxes they pay they won't have legal access to (not yet anyway), which limits the need to keep raising the rates on the legal workers (and the equal amount contributions made by employers) in check. Also flooding the market with cheap labor creates downward pressure on wages for competing interests, i.e., those with legal, American citizen workers. Wake up and smell the coffee, American enterprises have gone global in their mentality, driven by cheap labor costs...whether they send the jobs overseas or bring the workers illegally here, it's all the same... you lose to some degree. Watch the standard of living erode over time, and it'll strike home. Hell, part of the reason most Americans are still maintaining a higher standard of living is the ever rising amount of currently cheap debt they've sunk themselves into. Wait till rates rise and the alarm bells ring...
