Regular readers of these threads know I have often skewered Fox & Friends Weekend co-host Julian Phillips for his liberalism, inanity and the general sense of unease he projects.
I believe I've even observed that he "doesn't feel comfortable in his own skin."
This morning's show gave evidence that such might be quite literally true.
There was a running joke among the co-hosts this morning, with news reader Alyson Camerota joining in, over the fact that Julian and co-host Adam Housley were wearing identical suits.
At the end of one such light-hearted moment, Julian suddenly exclaimed: "ebony & ivory," referring to the fact that he's black and Housley is white.
I was jarred by the comment. It seemed to come entirely out of left field. No one had mentioned their race and it was entirely extraneous to the matter at hand. The 'same suit' shtick would have been the same if it had pertained to Housley and Mike Jerrick.
So why did Phillips inject race? I think it reflects the fact that it's probably difficult for white Americans to apreciate just how much race 'colors' everything for black Americans, how it lays just beneath the surface in many unexpected and seemingly unrelated ways.
I actually found myself feeling sorry for Phillips.
Your thoughts? Anyone else see the segment and found his comment to be an odd non sequitur?

What you describe sounds like it would be uncomfortable to watch.
The kooks calling in to C-SPAN's Washington Journal are giving me my entertainment this morning.

His comment made me think: most white FReepers sit there and watch Julian, and while not unaware of his race are judging him by what he says and how he acts. But all this time, Julian has been sitting there thinking - 'hey, I'm the black guy here.'
It's kind of sad, and I believe probably reflective of how many blacks feel in society. There still is a yawning racial divide in our country.
I head it. I agree...it was very odd.
And you're right...Julian does tend to inject a lot of Liberal talking points into what he says on there.
I caught his quip about hurricanes and "global warming".
In the last few weeks I've noticed that if the other two think he's about to venture off topic...they tend to talk a little faster or talk over him.
Julian is the reason I don't watch the show. Let me know when he acts out of character - that will be noteworthy.
There will be this racial divide in America until they quite overplaying it. It is injected into every walk of life daily and will not go away simply because it is used as a crutch and for political reasons to divide.
In this case, Julian wasn't using race as a crutch, or baselessly crying "racism." His comment was really apropos of nothing. It simply was a window on his soul - revealing how he seems himself. I thought it was telling, and sad.
It is very sad. When I see him, I must admit I have seen an insecurity and self-consciousness in him. I have spoken to you about that a few times before. His insecurity is palpable, whether it be about his race or not. It is a shame.
What was done to the blacks for centuries was terrible, and as you say, "there still is a yawning racial divide in our country".
I am often amazed at how well adapted some blacks are to the constant ongoing treatment......... like a relatively simple thing like the store clerk who follows around a totally innocent (but black) customer in a store, fearful of theft. I don't think I would handle it as well as many of the blacks.
We all gotta find a way to love each other. There is not much time left.

Julian makes for bad FNC viewing, period. I don't care if he's black, green, or purple, I still can't stand him. He's annoying and grating on the nerves. I turn on FNC before anything else every weekday morning, but avoid it like the plague on the weekends.
Julian lives and thinks in terms of race, which is typical of the liberal left. He views life through a racial prism. One on one, he's probably a nice guy. But, his racial sensitivity creates the impression that he's uncomfortable with who he is and this is what you are reacting to. Sadly, Julian perpetrates the racial stereotype Democrats and the media keep trying to shove down our throats.
It's easy to tell the difference between black liberals or conservatives on TV. Black conservatives talk issues, positions and solutions without regard to race. Black liberals have to inject race into every issue as part of the problem or solution.

Do you remember when Kerry first started out his campaign?
He refered to his wife Terry, as african-american. He was immediatly chastised by the loyal lib Blacks that she was not an african-american, due to her skin color.
Ill not forget that one.
No offense but I have to disagree with your "yawning racial divide in this country" comment. Go to any Black Republican organization meeting and you will not see this. Black conservatives may meet as a group but they will be discussing issues just like any other political organization, without injecting race into every position or situation.
