Hurricane Wilma slowly drifts toward the Southeast Gulf of Mexico after relentlessly pounding Cozumel and Cancun for more than 24 hours. Early reports indicate extensive wind and flood damage to Mexico's resort-studded Mayan Riviera. Mexican officials said about 20,000 tourists were at shelters and hotels on the mainland south of Cancun and an estimated 10,000-12,000 were in Cancun itself. About 50 hotels were evacuated.
In preparation for Hurricane Wilma's anticipated Florida landfall, a Hurricane Watch and mandatory evacuation have been issued for the Florida Keys and Florida Bay. Mandatory evacuations for Marco Island and much of Naples are in effect, as well as high surf advisories and high risk of rip currents along Florida's panhandle and Big Bend coasts. Bus services are available for Monroe Co. and other counties for residents who do not have transportation. Additional storm watches for the Florida peninsula are expected later today.
The 2005 hurricane season altered the record books again today with the formation of Tropical Storm Alpha south of Hispanola. Preliminary forecasts indicate TS Alpha will not affect the U.S. mainland.

From the 1000 to the 1600 Advisory, Wilma moved 9.23 miles at 317.9 degrees magnetic (NW = 315) for a blazing forward speed of 1.53 mph.
Miami schools playing it safe...closed Monday.
Why were there so many tourists still there? I guess those 28 planes didn't make it in time. I said they were cutting it close.

That's what I told my husband. Since we'll be waiting till tomorrow, it'll probably be awful weather while we're doing preparations.
My folks have a story from years ago about a hurricane "surprise" that picked up speed and changed direction in the middle of the night. Don't know what storm it was, but evidently they went to bed thinking all was well, and woke up to find that the hurricane was headed our way and was moving fast.
They tell about making outside preps as the wind increased and the rain poured. Talked to them today in Atlanta, they're glad they're on vacation and missing any excitement, but we'll have to go over to their place tomorrow and make some preparations if it seems like it's going to give us problems.
..as soon as Max Mayfield finished, and we heard 'Hurricane Watch' as far as Titusville on the east coast (my neck of the woods)...
..the sky darkened, as if on cue, and thunder started & it's raining.
...until then, it's been a calm, slightly overcast, non rainy type day.
...today would have been a perfect day to do that....sigh...
..but we kept waiting for signals...
..and tomorrow will, no doubt, be rainy, windy, etc.

Movement since the last eye fix (1:21 ago) - North (11 degrees) at 4.3 mph. This eye fix puts Wilma approximately 12 miles from the Gulf and 23 miles northwest of Cancun.
Also, add Lake Okeechobee to the hurricane watch area (somehow, the NHC left it off initially, but did a special update).

Mayfield being interviewed on CNN, reiterating that Wilma is likely to go over the loop current and reintensify to a Cat 3 briefly.

Statement as of 5:00 PM EDT on October 22, 2005
...Alpha becomes the twenty-second named storm of the season and
breaks the all-time record for the most active season on record...
At 5 PM EDT...the government of the Dominican Republic has issued a
Tropical Storm Warning for the entire northern coast. A Tropical
Storm Warning is now if effect for the entire coastline of the
Dominican Republic.
At 5 PM EDT...the government of the Bahamas has upgraded the
tropical storm watch to a Tropical Storm Warning for the
southeastern Bahamas...and for the Turks and Caicos.
A tropical Strom warning remains in effect for the entire coastline
of Haiti.
For storm information specific to your area...including possible
inland watches and warnings...please monitor products issued
by your local weather office.
At 5 PM EDT...2100z...the center of tropical storm Alpha was located
near latitude 17.0 north... longitude 68.9 west or about 210
miles... 335 km... west-southwest of San Juan Puerto Rico and about
125 miles... 200 km...south-southeast of Santo Domingo in the
Dominican Republic.
Alpha is moving toward the northwest near 15 mph ...24 km/hr...and
this motion is expected to continue for the next 24 hours and should
bring the center of Alpha to the coast of Hispaniola late tonight
or early Sunday morning.
Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph... 65 km/hr...with higher
gusts. Some strengthening is possible before the center of the
tropical storm reaches the southern coast of Hispaniola.
Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 45 miles... 75 km
from the center.
Estimated minimum central pressure is 1005 mb...29.68 inches.
The storm is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 4
to 8 inches over much of Hispaniola...with possible isolated
maximum amounts of 12 inches. These rains could produce
life-threatening flash floods and mud slides.
Repeating the 5 PM EDT position...17.0 N... 68.9 W. Movement
...Stationary. Maximum sustained winds... 40 mph. Minimum central
pressure... 1005 mb.
An intermediate advisory will be issued by the National Hurricane
Center at 8 PM EDT followed by the next complete advisory at 11 PM
EDT.

I woke up this morning to a stiff breeze from the south and heavy t-storms in the afternoon. We're under a flash flood warning. The island of Hispaniola next door is under a TS watch. And Joe Bastardi was about to write this one off yesterday.
