This is where I get off
NRO - The Corner ^ | 10/22/2005 | Goldberg, Jonah

Jonah bails entirely on Harriet...

THIS IS WHERE I GET OFF [Jonah Goldberg ]

My official position on Miers has been to criticize the selection, but give her the benefit of the doubt until the hearings. In other words, bad pick but she's the nominee so let's give her a shot.

No more.

After reading this story I'm officially against Miers. I'm with the Editors , Will, Frum, and Krauthammer.

It's not just that Miers was in favor of racial quotas -- we'd pretty much known that for a while. It's the fundamental confirmation that she's a go-along-with-the-crowd establishmentarian. The White House says that her enthusiastic support for goals, timetables and quotas at the Bar Association says nothing about her views on government race policies. Yeah, right. She simultaneously thought what she was doing was great and important while also believing it would be unconstitutional if the government did the same thing.

The White House says she's an unchanging rock of principle. Uh huh. So have her opinions held constant since the early 1990s? Or have they shifted with the wind? If she's a rock, I don't want her. If she's a weather vane, I don't want her.

I just don't want her.

Start over.

She just wanted more minorities and females as members of the Texas Bar.

"a policy of setting aside a specific number of seats on the board for women and minorities." - WaPo article

That would be more than a goal. That would be Miers the other directors of the Texas Bar mandating quotas based on race, ethnicity, and gender.

And she is basically a bureaucrat like John Roberts..

Big government republicans are all bureaucrats elected, appointed or not..

Big government republican.?... should be a term like individualist communist never will happen.. but it has.. at least with republicans.. Takes a buttload of propaganda to make that happen.. Wonder "we" can trick the muzzie terrorists to blow up some TV stations and newspapers..

>>>>How about "a policy of setting aside a specific number of seats on the board for women and minorities."

Still out of context. Miers set a goal and the 'policy' phrase is not a quote of Miers intentions.

Tell me, why on earth wouldn't Jo Becker and Sylvia Moreno get Ms. Miers input directly on her position of goals instead of interviewing everyone one elses interpretation?

Thanks for the ping - it was very useful in responding to Dane, who claims Miers' support for hard quotas is no big deal.

Really? How about this quote later in the article? "Walter Sutton, a black lawyer Miers named to one of the four slots during her tenure, said she was 'passionate' about the program."

Tell me, why on earth wouldn't Jo Becker and Sylvia Moreno get Ms. Miers input directly on her position of goals instead of interviewing everyone one elses interpretation?

Miers is not speaking to the press prior to the confirmation hearings. Moreover, this article is a WaPo positive spin on Miers, that is, it is generally an advocacy piece because she favored racial and gender quotas.

That is a quote of Ms. Miers stating that 'Miers' created quotas?

Surely you jest!

>>>Moreover, this article is a WaPo positive spin on Miers, that is, it is generally an advocacy piece because she favored racial and gender quotas.

Implying that Ms. Miers 'created' quotas is a posititive spin?

You are really reaching.

Enjoy your day! Ciao!

Sadly just adds to my growing conviction this nomination must be withdrawn.

It's the fundamental confirmation that she's a go-along-with-the-crowd establishmentarian.

This is the culmination of a life-long dream. Here goes:

So does that mean she is in favor of antidisestablishmentarianism?

I finally got to use that word in a sentence!!!!

Wonder (if) "we" can trick the muzzie terrorists to blow up some TV stations and newspapers.. Can YOU explain that? ]

It was a rhetorical comment.. generated by persistent MsM media propaganda.. I don't have cable.. What I get on MY TV is 180 degrees out from reality.. i.e. talking heads, pundits, political commentators, even most newspaper columns(politically).

The sense is the "enemy within" is defintely an enemy..
And it "IS" an enemy.. You do know that.?.

At the Washington Post (which ran the article - not National Review), it is definitely a positive spin. WaPo has a long history of pushing quotas.

There are none so blind as those who refuse to see.

Lucianne's little boy.

I've attended two talks that Jonah has given, and found him funny, incredibly well-informed, and brilliant. That Lucianne is his mother is irrelevant. Would you want to be written off because of who your parents are?

Yes, I read the article, and I agree with Jonah Goldberg, that the issue is less the specifics of the policies at her law firm (perhaps defensible "goal setting") or the Texas bar association (much less defensible set asides) than Harriet Miers' general approach in all her work settings. It's work hard, paper over differences for general comity, and "get along." These are ADMIRABLE qualities, but NOT for a Supreme Court justice where divisive distinctions must frequently be made, disputed, and defended at the highest intellectual level. There is very little suggesting Harriet Miers possesses these abilities. Her reported interventions in the Michigan cases suggest that there is more than just style to worry about with Ms. Miers.

I have profound worries of Harriet Miers falling quickly into the mold of a David Souter. At best should would be an indecisive Sandra Day O'Connor, This is not what the SCOTUS or the country needs.

Oh I know the enemy is within. They have all sorts of groups out there that support blowing up anything that doesn't cowtow to their views.

A sign of how bad the Miers nomination is: it has pushed otherwise good conservatives into the uncomfortable position of splitting hairs in defense of racial quotas!
