America had enough of Jimmy Carter, now if he would just go away
Sierra Sun ^ | October 20, 2005 | Prentiss Davis

When I studied history in college we were taught that James Buchanan was the worst president of the United States and we will not see the likes of him again; but no-one could have foreseen Jimmy Carter."

So wrote columnist Joseph Alsop. No matter how hard the left tries, facts are facts and Carter remains the most inept president of the post-war period.

For those of us who endured Carter's four years in office no amount of revision can alter the bleak memory of unemployment, gas lines, runaway inflation, sky-high interest rates, amateurish foreign policy and the declining military strength that lost us the respect of our friends and earned the contempt of our adversaries.

The ineptitude of his administration was nowhere more apparent than when his Department of Energy, by pure bureaucratic incompetence, created a gasoline shortage where none existed. Those of us driving 100-plus miles to work each day were not amused. One of the policies of the Carter administration abandoned by Reagan was the geographic allocation of gasoline supplies by government bureaucrats rather than the oil companies. I can't recall seeing any gas lines in America since Carter left office.

Carter is so bad, so inept, so stupid, he couldn't even get elected to a second term as governor of Georgia!

And it appears he hasn't learned ANYTHING since being booted. He is still stupid and out of touch.

But, he won the Nobel Peace Prize. That makes him good, doesn't it?

I think the only thing that will get Carter to shut up is either duct tape or a visit from the grim reaper.

According to this website, Jimmy was 81 on October 1st. He seems healthy enough so I think he's going to be around for some years to come.

What the press really ignores, however, is how much of Carter's foreign policy ineptitude is directly related to our current problems in the Middle East. Carter didn't stop Lebanon from descending into a perpetual war zone. Carter lost Iran to Muslim extremists. Carter's response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was to boycott the Moscow Olympics. Carter did nothing to deter the Iran-Iraq war. Carter's great accomplishment, his treaty between Israel and Egypt, set the tone of "land for peace" that has not only made a mess of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict but Sadat was assassinated, in part, over it and Egypt hasn't been as moderate since. Yeah. Great president. I don't think the US could have survived a second term. We'd all be pledging alegence to a hammer and sickle.

Carter really takes the cake. Insane gas lines, he lost us the Panama Canal, and he sat and watched while a western-friendly Iran fell to the savages, thusly making him largely culpable for the rise of terrorism in the last quarter century. What a gem.

Sure he did. He learned he wasn't really a conservative Southern Baptist afterall. After running as one for the votes he then learned he really wasn't one of them afterall.

Warren Harding was also a horrible presiden, but Jimmy Carter is the worst in American history. 2+ decades later there is still fallout from his debacle of an administration. At least Harding loved America.

I always thought Carter was just an incompetent boob, but he has proven me wrong. Because of his hatred of America which he now has a problem keeping hidden, I realize that many of the "dumb" things he did were actually deliberate attempts to undermine this country because he is a commie. I thought that he was an honest incompetent boob, but now articles have come to light recently showing that his attempts at a shakedown of the Shah of Iran is what led to the beginning of the terror war on America. Now I know why Carter has always been friendly with every crooked commie dictator on the planet - because he is just like them or at least a wannabe commie crook who hates this country like they do.

Local paper ran an editorial saying what a great energy plan Carter had (compared to Bush). The left's desperation is driving them crazy.

The only amendment I would make to your appraisal is that he simply gave the Panama Canal away and it's now run by the Chinese!

Mugabe became president of Zimbabwe because Carter would not allow an election without Mugabe.

Hope he takes Bubba with him.......those two are such a stain (no pun intended........yes it was) on the Presidency that no one in their right mind could see ANYTHING good about their terms. Doom, gloom, stupidity (Carter) deviancy, corruption, sell outs (Clinton)......what a pair!

As bad as he was in office, I think he has been worse since he left (his tenure has been longer). He has had his hand in both North Korea and Venezuela, the biggest trouble spot today and the biggest trouble spot in the near future.

He was/is awful.

And we can't even impeach him.

Carter serves his purpose by reminding voters what democrat Presidents are like. He is so off the wall that I don't think that he hurts Republicans.

Even DUers tend to ignore him.
