Do you REALLY think that Bush would be stupid enough to nominate Gonzales if he sees Miers get voted down by his own party?

If I were Bush, here's what I would consider doing: I would not nominate anyone until late next summer just before the Congressional election campaign started.

Then, I would nominate Gonzalez and watch them sweat.

All this is, of course, dependent upon what's on the docket for this term.

Get ready for Alberto Gonzales.

Ar-g-g-g-g-g-h!

But seriously, I think that's unlikely.

If W withdraws Miers, it will be in large part because he realized that he cannot afford to alienate his conservative base. Nominating Gonzales on top of Miers would be such a provocation to the right that it would make the rift permanent and in many ways doom the Bush presidency. I'm optimistic that if Miers is withdrawn the next nominee would be much better qualified and more palatable to conservatives.

If you're right then Bush would be 0 for 2.

Get ready for Alberto Gonzales.

Proving what only some now suspect: President Bush is not stupid, just vindictive.

Politically fallible wears better. Vindictiveness only indicates a small man.

i don't think there's a dime difference between Miers or Gonzales..........except Gonzales is alot more versed in the constitution and obviously alot smarter. I'm a woman and this is setting back conservative women who like to make it because they are qualified not because they are a friend of the Presidents.

What is the problem? Gonzalez has everything that the Uber-Cons say Miers did not.

Oh gawd no!!!

We will just see a repeat of it - Cronyism, not conservative enough, lots and lots and lots of questions about inner White House documents.

If they do Gonzalez, it will be proof they learned NOTHING from the Miers mistake.

Here is what Bush MUST do:
Nominate a PROVEN Conservative -
Luttig, Edith Jones, Janice Rogers Brown.

Now, dont give me any grief about how they are not confirmable ... that's NOT the point. If BUSH WANTS CONSERVATIVES BACK IN HIS CORNER, HE HAS TO NOMINATE A CONSERVATIVE. A PROVEN CONSERVATIVE.

No wishy-washy moderate Judge like that 9th circuit hispanic judge. A real conservative.

The Dems will have their fight, we will have ours.
But Bush will be back in the saddle, with an army by his side.
That's his only chance.

Gonzales is just another affirmative action nominee. That is how the conservatives view him. It will aggravate the rift that GWB has created with Miers. GWB for the sake of the voters who made the GOP the majority must nominate a person with conservative credentials, outside of GWB's political influence.

All he had to do was say ""JRB" and a lot of us would
have stood on a Bridge for a week naked to support the nomination.....almost naked....just wearing a JRB for SCOTUS sign....alas.

Get ready for Alberto Gonzales.

Some of us are quite ready.

Senate Confirmation Hearing - January 6

Gonzales: There is no requirement, of course, upon state and locals to enforce federal immigration laws. It is purely voluntary. In fact, of course, some states have prohibitions [against?]. They couldn't, even if they wanted to. [They couldn't what?] In some cases, the department, as I understand it, has entered into with state and local departments in terms of memorandums of understandings in order to enforce this [?]. I certainly am sensitive to the notion that some local law enforcement people don't want to exercise this authority. Well, we're not saying that they have to. If they want to they can assist in fighting the war on terror, that's what this opinion allows us to do. Personally I would worry about a policy that permits someone, a local law enforcement official, to use this authority somehow as a club to harass uhh they might be unlawful aliens but otherwise lawful citizens. That would be troubling. That would be troubling to the President.

You always have such encouraging, inspiring, hopeful sentiments!

I'm praying President Bush is more mature than that.
