October 20, 2005
Gunmen have kidnapped one of the lawyers involved in the trial of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. Sadoun Nasouaf al-Janavi was taken from his office in eastern Baghdad.
He is acting for one of Saddam Hussein's co-defendants, Awad Hamed al-Bandar. One report said seven other people were seized at the same time.
In a defiant appearance at his trial on Wednesday, Saddam Hussein pleaded not guilty to charges over the killing of 148 people in a Shia town in 1982.
He refused to confirm his identity, telling the presiding judge: "Who are you? What is all this?"
All eight defendants pleaded not guilty to charges of ordering the killing of 148 Shia men in 1982. If convicted, they could face the death penalty. The trial was adjourned until 28 November.

I'm confused. Is this bad news or good news?
kinda counterproductive, isn't it?
Maybe he'll step up,
lean in,
and take one for the team..
Alan M. Dershowitz
Maybe he had him kidnapped to delay his trial. Or extremist behead the guy . I think if the Iraqis had found Saddam, we wouldn't be going through this American Like Judical system. He would have suffered the same fate as his sons.
Exactly.
How about sending him as a replacement?
Saddam fired him which gives him a total of one good quality.
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off my miscellaneous ping list.
Guess its Saddam's way of postponing the trial even longer.
Wasn't one of the Guardian's (anti-war leftist fishwrap)kidnapped recently?? Now this.... maybe some Iraqis are simply tired of the terrorists' apologists and abettors??? Or maybe just some professional, nonpartisan enterprising thugs at work??
Mixed feelings? Glee and schadenfreude, you mean?
Further trial proceedings will now have to be relocated. Because the terrorists will now know where they are being held.
Too bad Saadoun Janabi didn't spell his name R-A-M-S-E-Y C-L-A-R-K.
Great idea. Tell him he can get lots of press over there, and he'll trample people in his haste to go.
Remembering "Wag The Dog" when Bubba was covering his arse.
My hunch is that this is a self-directed (or Saddam directed) "kidnapping" to delay the bastard's date with the hangman....
I agree. This is a warning to witnesses...like...We can get to anyone. The attorney's probably sipping tea under a plam tree.

Apologies to the patriotic Dershowitz's out there (assuming there are some).
