"The biggest questions we face...are ultimately connected to moral and spiritual choices..." - Jim Wallis, editor of Sojourners and author of God's Politics: Why the Right Gets it Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get it.
"Everything feels crazy. But on small patches of earth, I can see just as much messy mercy and grace as ever..." - Anne Lamott, columnist and author of Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith.
"Everything worthwhile begins with a spiritual encounter and ends in a social encounter." - Richard Rohr, founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation and author of Adam's Return: The Five Promises of Male Initiation.
It's hard to decide whether this should be in the general news section or the religion section, since Jim Wallis seems to be trying to bridge or merge the two categories completely.
Spiritual? Heh. Anne Lamott is famous for having said, "You can safely assume that you've created God in your own image when
it turns out that God hates all the same people you do."
I'm not saying I disagree with her, just that it's passing strange to advertise her as spiritual.
And Richard Rohr is one of those individuals who started the New Age folderol in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, which could have been VERY Catholic, if not for people like him. I think he is also pals with Matthew Fox, if I rememver correctly.
I must have some kind of lisp or something...sometimes, when I try to say "prophetic", it comes out as "pathetic". And it probably will be a "pathetic" weekend.
All you need to know about this article is the source - Sojourners; and that says enough to make you line your bird cage with it.
Sojourners is left of the left in Christian circles, having joined the spiritual perversion of the Christian faith by the advocates of liberation theology, which has been advanced by Marxists beginning primarily in the 1960s.
The United Methodist Church, whose clerical members probably comprise the largest segment among Sojourners constitutency, has theological presentations in their publications, down to the level of layworkers, which consistently portray Jesus' mission as one of class-struggle and an attempt to create a community of the powerless-poor against the all-powerful-rich. It is a presentation in which the spiritual nature of Jesus mission is reduced to mere Marxist materialism.
They are now employed in the effort of the left to supply a spiritual patina to the Marxists/socialist oriented policies of the Democrats.
It should prove no more successful than it has been to the denominations alligned with Sojourners - all in decline.
It's BUSH's FAULT!!!
***"The five promises of male initiation"***
What the heck is that?
Sounds like Freemasonry or some other cult initiation to me.
I guess the author wants to replace the Republicans with the Democrats, yet it is the DEMS who have raised the politics of blame and fear to the level we see today.
Here's some prophecy for ya: Dems lose big in 06, and Hilllary stomped in 08.
I remember Sojourners from many years ago, when the Maryknollers and others were so busy building "Base Communities" (read Communist cells) in Central and South America.
Wow. "Traveling Mercies" by Lamott is one of my favorite books. I laughed so hard my ribs hurt. She's just so damn HUMAN and isn't afraid to be honest about her failures and failings.
“And Richard Rohr is one of those individuals who started the New Age folderol in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, which could have been VERY Catholic, if not for people like him. ..”
I realize this is an old thread, but was wondering if you have a link about Fr. Richard Rohr. Our parish is having a discussion about his book, “Things Hidden: Scripture as Spirituality”, but I don’t want to attend, because a good attendance will bring about more discussions.
If I remember correctly, Rohr is a defrocked priest who wouldn’t shut up about Meister Eckhart and “Creation Spirituality” or some other syncretistic twaddle.
