House OKs "cheeseburger" bill barring lawsuits

By Joanne Kenen 16 minutes ago

The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday easily passed the so-called "cheeseburger bill" that would block lawsuits blaming the food industry for making people fat.

The "Personal Responsibility in Food Consumption Act" passed on a bipartisan 300 to 120 vote. The House approved a similar bill last year but it died in the Senate and no Senate action is scheduled on companion legislation.

Leading business groups and the White House back the bill. The White House in a statement said, "Food manufacturers, marketers, distributors, advertisers and sellers should not be held liable for injury because a person's consumption of legal, unadulterated food is associated with the person's weight gain or obesity."

The bill would block in state and federal courts what backers consider "frivolous lawsuits against the manufacturers, distributors or sellers of food or nonalcoholic beverage products" arising from obesity claims. It would not block civil lawsuits stemming from tainted food.

Triple cheeseburgers with biggie fries don't kill people.... morbidly obese morons who don't know when to stick a cork in their pie holes kill themselves. (Too long for a bumper sticker, I guess).

Darn. I spent all this time eating junk food and getting fat so I could sue and retire early.

Personally I blame the beer industry for my softening gut, and I'm gonna sue 'em. I'll take my payoff in product, please...

The sickening part is that the Senate has had this before them for over a year.

Being fat is like being a homosexual. It is a lifestyle choice. Not a disease. The way to keep from being fat is to quit stuffing your mouth with cheeseburgers and pizza. The way to stop being a homosexual is to sit down and keep your mouth closed.

I agree with the intent, but why single out a single industry for protection from stupid lawsuits? How about good old fashioned Tort Reform. Wouldn't have to be all that complicated either. Just make it a Loser Pays system.

I would support an FDA regulation outlawing anyone from selling those abominable reconstituted potato paste products as "FRIES".

The really sickening part is that we are such a lawsuit happy country and in such denial of personal responsibility that our government even wastes time on crap like this.

I agree this is great. Now let's make it illegal for people to claim drug use turned them into losers while ignoring the fact that they were losers before they took the first toke, or hit, or shotglass, etc.

How stupid is it that this is even necessary?
