Residents Warned To Watch Their Pets

Coyotes have been spotted in and around the Fallsgrove community in Rockville, Md...

Adcock said despite its docile appearance, it's part of a pack made up of some of the largest and most aggressive such animals he's every dealt with.

"The pack is too big," Adcock said. "I mean any place else in Maryland you get two or three animals from a job and its pretty much over with."

So far he's trapped 12 animals and his job is not yet finished.

The trapper told News4 he took a picture of a large male coyote in a stalking position just 15 feet from the popular footpath that runs through the Fallsgrove.

After Fallsgrove residents became alarmed ...

Some conflicts that have arisen."

Officials have warned ...residents ... not to leave cats and small dogs alone in their yards.

A farmer down the road from me had a couple of llamas killed by coyotes a while back. They don't seem to bother the horses or cattle too much but they go after the smaller critters every so often.

"Coyotes".
Pfft.
They're wolf hybrids.

We're up to our necks in 'em now.

http://www.caledonianrecord.com/pages/local_news/story/fef373e9d

A pack of them came menacingly down off the ridge towards my dad.
He had to back up a couple hundred feet, maintaining eye contact with them until he got to his truck and his rifle.

"Bold" and "big" doesn't even begin to describe them.

If Rockville thinks the coy-wolves are bad, they should just wait a while.
We have mountain lions now too although the DNR vehemently denies it.
They're moving steadily eastward.

[we're supposed to believe the DNR rather than our own lying eyes]

This is pretty funny, Rockville is where a lot of DC bigshots live, including some of the heads of environmental groups and lobbyists. They don't like even a taste of what they do not hesitate to impose on the rest of us.
We'd be glad to send them a few Wyoming wolves, since it is the stance of wolf worshipers that wolves destroy coyotes and do not attack humans.

We've got 'em here in the Florida Panhandle now, too. See them fairly regularly, but single not in packs. Maybe we need a bounty?...........

Not that many "DC bigshots" live in Rockville. Chevy Chase, Potomac, Bethesda maybe, but not Rockville, way too pedestrian for them.

No thanks.

We've already got our own version....:)

We've also already suffered enough at the hands of the DC "Jack London wannbes".

We're besieged by plagues of black bear and chicken hawks because some green idiot living in the inner city thought they surely must be "endangered" because *they* never saw any.

Time to call out the Plott Hounds. I guess modern day Irish Wolfhounds are a shadow of their former selves and unlikely to be of much use in controlling these critters.

Most of the other larger breeds which could take them on are probably too slow to actually catch one - I'm thi9nking dogs like Tibetan Mastiffs and related types. Strong enough, but too slow.

Plott Hound packs and hunters with guns to follow them may be the way to go.

I don't understand the big deal. Coyotes are all over the country now, including in my back yard (big packs). Should I be afraid?

Plotts kick @ss!

I have Ibizan Hounds but they're more a small game/deer/lion dogs.

I don't think they'd go after other canids although they did get pretty hostile about a Chow who was peeing on "their" fence line..

Should I be afraid?

You should be cautious. Coyotes, when they have no fear of being hunted, are not afraid of people, aggressive, smart and will use pack tactics against even large dogs. Sooner or later human attacks will occur, they are certainly capable of taking children.

What is the big fuss? The immigrant coyote was just doing the work that the local Rockville coyotes wouldn't do.

If you have "small" pet dogs, cats or little kids, yes, be concerned.

A pack of coy-wolves will go after a large dog, too.

An especially hard winter will force them to behave "abnormally", such as the incident with my dad.

Farmers here go through the yearly spring ritual of staking out their calving cows and sheep herds.

Lambs and calves get taken frequently.

A few mountain lions would also help to control the coyote population.

So do I.

A pack of Plotts, a lot of bears and mountain lions, a good flintlock rifle .54 caliber, lots of woods to hunt in and no PETA people around.

Paradise.
