Portions of I-95 briefly shut down on concerns over suspected terrorist plot; Uncorroborated information said to come from source abroad
Federal authorities are detaining at least one man of Egyptian origin who worked at a Middle Eastern market in Baltimore in connection with a threat that closed Interstate 95 and the Harbor and Fort McHenry tunnels after concern over a suspected terrorist plot to blow up one of the tunnels.
The shutdown caused gridlock throughout the metropolitan region as police and federal agents investigated the threat.

One interesting tidbit is that he said he was contacted by the FBI last night and they told him they were moving up the operation date to today.
Sounds like there were people under surveillance that the FBI were going to allow to proceed with whatever plans they had but for some reason the timeline changed based on some new information. One report says that an informant in the Netherlands gave information while another report says that it was possibly from the Middle East.
However, the more crucial information that precipitated today's activities is probably the information mentioned last Friday. What that is I don't know yet.
Also, it's interesting to note that if this was a "walk the dog" scenario whereby suspects were allowed to operate while being watched that doesn't explain the searching of commerical trucks after the arrests began this morning. Possibly, the new information was that there was to be a multi-pronged attack with a cell or cells not identified other than the vehicle of choice.
Chief of the Transit Authority is saying that today's operation was months in the planning (shutting down the tunnels) but it wasn't finalized until the last three days. He says firmly that the events in the city (arrests) are connected to the tunnel closures.
Fine people, the Amish....
Thanks. Hussein was listed as "detained" and "led away without handcuffs" as to other arrests WBAL radio is reporting as many as 30 arrests. The immigration charges are probably the four so far but it sounds like there are more to come.
What a beautiful, peaceful picture.

And now it's over to Bob for the weather.
:-D
"Guilt in such crimes should be punishable by going away for 99 years. No room for equivocation dealing with bomb threats. the simply act of threatening is enough to shut down commerce."
I think I have a more effective punishment. Put them in a cage in the place that they threatened so they cannot escape. Feed them and water them so they don't starve then just wait it out. Feed them cheap pork ribs with no sauce.
...and the FBI is on a "witch hunt"

This is weird.....bomb attempt in Baltimore, 4 Egyptians arrested...possibly 30 others and this thread has difficulty cracking a ton.
The threat, described by federal officials as specific but unsubstantiated, claimed that an Egyptian man living in the Baltimore area was plotting to drive a bomb-laden vehicle into one of the tunnels and detonate the explosives. At least six Egyptian terrorists planned to smuggle the explosives into the Port of Baltimore by ship, according to a tipster. Agents searched a Southeast Baltimore market and two pizza restaurants and detained four men -- three Egyptians and a Jordanian -- on immigration violations.
But that same informant had a "questionable" performance on a polygraph and his story has not been corroborated by others, according to a source familiar with the investigation.
Looks like more details are leaking out. Now it's an Egyptian man living in Baltimore planned to execute the attack and that the explosives may have come from a ship at the Port of Baltimore.
This is getting bigger in scope by the hour. Notice how the article questions the veracity of the informant after specific details are mentioned but doesn't identify where the informant was polygraphed? Was it an overseas informant or local?
Just a guess but the polygraph was local and the informant was Maged Hussein or someone in the Baltimore Egyptian community. A google search shows a Hussein in the Egyptian military but the name is very common. However, the ship connection for the explosives is very interesting.
Sure they do. We helped them drill for oil when they wanted wells for water and then they kicked us out and nationalized all of our hard work. Then they flocked behind a guy like Nasser when he telegraphed pan-arabism and they challenged our resolve to tough out a military conflict. And we ran away.
They're quite aware of history but the problem is so is the current administration. And high marks should be given to MD Governor Bob Ehrlich for facilitating federal assests to uncover a terror plot and thwarting it between rush hours.
