John Fund of WSJ Says There's a Chance Miers Nomination Will be Pulled Before Hearings
Fox News Channel | governsleastgovernsbest

Posted on 10/18/2005 12:12:48 PM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

In a just-completed interview on Fox News, John Fund of the Wall Street Journal entertained the possibility that the Miers' nomination would be pulled before getting to hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Asked how that could happen, Fund explained [paraphrasing]:

"It could happen if a number of Republican senators go to the White House and say that getting the Miers nomination through would be too much 'heavy political lifting' and that the hearings would offend the dignity of the Senate."

Reading between the lines, my sense is that the well-connected Fund is hearing off-the-record from Republican senators and/or their aides that Miers is a not-ready-for-prime-time player.

For Fund to countenance the possibility that Miers' appearance before the Senate would be an affront to its dignity is very strong stuff.

It's hard to imagine Fund would raise the notion unless he were convinced that Miers would not merely fail to meet the John Roberts gold-standard, but that her hearings would risk degenerating into an embarrassing farce.

"Dignity of the Senate." I know, I know, some will call that an oxymoron.

Even so, if a number of Republican senators are convinced that Miers would embarrass herself as well as the WH were she subjected to the intense scrutiny of a hearing, the kindest and politically wisest course might be to pull her nomination.

Yeah, well, I'm saying "wishful thinking" on Fund's part, and that I very much doubt it, for many reasons.

The biggest guess as to Why Miers was that the GOP couldn't be counted on to fight for a really well-known quantity. If they cower before the prospect of even hearing this nominee... well, the words "ugly beyond imagination" come to mind.

I am beginning to wish that she would just withdraw herself. I am tired of the President getting bashed by Republicans.

Are you telling me that a body that includes Robert Byrd, John Kerry, Teddy the K, and Barbara Boxer Shorts has dignity???

Bwahahahaha.

Fine, that scenario actually wouldn't bother me, and I am pro-Miers. The woman deserves a hearing, if the Senators think she is not up to the job...they have done their job.

Sounds to me those bashing the President are trying to give some senators a hint/suggestion

I STILL want to know why these people are afraid to hear her speak at the hearings

Miers is a not-ready-for-prime-time player

That may be true, but let's wait and let the lady present herself at the hearings!!!
