Anybody know how to tell if anyone other than me may be using my wireless Internet connection? I have Verizon DSL and a wireless modem that is set up without the need to enter a password. Is there a way to tell if anybody in my neighborhood may be tapping into my connection? Also how does one set up a password? TIA.
Your ISP might be able to help you by checking who's on when you're not, or by what connection they have. Regardless, you should go ahead and use the password to protect yourself.
I'm gonna guess that your wireless modem literature tells you how to set up a password-- which you should change regularly.
I kow people who use other people's unprotected wifi, does that count? ;-)
You should use password and encryption. If you are not using the wireless function, just using cables, then fold up the aerials and keep the router on the floor. The wireless function will be negated
darn laptop
If you got a manual read it.
If not, find the model number of the device, google it on the net and read the manual on line.
You havent provided enough information for anyone to help you.
So, the impolite, but nevertheless best recommendation is the usual RTFM.

Set up a password and WEP protection. Change the default name/PW (probably admin/admin).
Consider taking your discussion over to the forums at Broadband Reports.
Password protection should have been an option when you loaded the software. Your default password is probably 'password'.
Log-in first... then push the 'any key'.
use the default ip address given by your manufacturer and set your access and password
Hey, don't boot me off. I'm normal, I promise
Try
192.168.100.1
or 192.168.1.1
and look at your modem it will tell you if WEP encryption is set up or not if not set it up it ain't hard.
You should have WEP or WPA encryption turned on. (WPA is a better, newer encryption -- if you have that, use it.)
Change the password for router administration. Too many routers have user and password as admin, admin.
Change the SSID name.
Turn off SSID broadcast.
The most important thing you need to do is change the adminstration password. If someone else can log into the router administration, they can lock you out of your own router.
This Security Now podcast has some great info about setting up a router for security.

RTFM, only as a last resort. LOL
Logon to your wireless router...the address is usually 192.168.1.0 .....
Check the DHCP list for computers other than yours and you will know who is logged on....Most people name their computer so you may be able to get an idea who it is...
Then institute WEP.....
