'Slave syndrome' may still affect black behavior Professor's theory set for talk today
By JOHN IWASAKI SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER
The troubling images of African Americans displaced by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans' impoverished neighborhoods didn't startle researcher Joy DeGruy-Leary.
"All Katrina did was reveal what was already there. I wasn't confused, wasn't surprised," she said. "I knew what the 9th Ward was about. The difference was, (before the disaster) everybody was OK about it. It was business as usual."
DeGruy-Leary, an assistant professor in Portland State University's Graduate School of Social Work, will discuss her theory of the relationship between race, culture, poverty and history today at the third Seattle Race Conference and tonight in a separate talk.
Her theory of "post-traumatic slave syndrome" concludes that African Americans needed to adapt to survive more than two centuries of slavery, and that those adaptations are reflected in their behaviors today.
Even though slavery symbolically ended after the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, DeGruy-Leary said, African Americans were "virtually re-enslaved" through legislation reflected in peonage such as sharecropping, black codes and convict-worker leasing, all of which restricted blacks and allowed white-owned businesses to have cheap labor, and Jim Crow laws, which enforced segregation.
Add the horror of lynchings -- more than 3,400 from 1882 to 1951, according to records of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama -- and African Americans in the United States have undergone tremendous trauma, she said.
She contends that no one acknowledges that trauma, much less has allowed African Americans to heal from it.

"post-traumatic slave syndrome" ??? I call it BS and a big fat excuse. This idiot 'professor' and his ilk need to stop enabling bad behavior with BS psychobable excuses and STFU. Enable..enable..enable, doesn't matter what the problem or people but when they are enabled then they never deal with the damn REAL PROBLEM!
I'm still racked and upset by that sabre toothed tiger who ate one of my relatives 20,000 years ago. Yeah, I can understand this still impacts people...
3400 lynchings in 70 years. Hideous abominations, for the blood and torture lust of crowds. But blacks kill more than that many blacks each year.
Slavery enforced illiteracy, broken families, and made it very difficult for most slaves to reap any benefit from their labor - it promoted laziness. So why would a free people continue in such chains?
Armenians, say, the underclass for centuries under the Ottomans, came here as refugees from genocide. They may still be haunted but they've succeeded. Or Jews, or the Vietnamese.
I guess because everyone has ancestry which was a slave at one time or another, that we all suffer from slave syndrome regardless of color.
Since Islam has always been the largest enslaver in the world, and still condones slavery today, reparations should be paid to all non- muslims with all that oil money they are now enslaving us economically with.
This is about a resonable as this so called "study" is. It's all about blame, blaming others for your failures today. Who funds these idiots anyway?
As a descendent of Danes, I'm a slave every day at cocktail hour to Carlsberg. I'm happy to learn through this thread that now I have someone to blame it on. Skaal!
Ditto.
Enshrining victimhood has been the curse of black culture for my lifetime.

That's a little less than 50 a year. How many whites have been horribly murdered during that time? How many children? How many horrible car accidents are there a year? We should all be cowering under our beds frightened to death of cars! 1951?
That was 54 years ago!
LMAO! Needs repeating.
BEE-ESS
It's more than just slavery.
and older too
Well, having had the "pleasure" of growing-up in the 9th ward in New Orleans, I'd have to agree that there were (are) problems that white America may never understand. Very near to the "Circle Food Store (Claiborne Avenue--outside the 9th ward)", there would be several pictorial stores that would show black men being burned alive, hung and mutilated. It was the 70s, and it was a time of rebellion.
The very "micro" of this reflects the "macro" that affects black America. That is, "America" in general, is the cause of these atrocities and only the "Democratic" party will protect you. Of course, the opposite is true but the effect of Democratic actions over time is not very well understood. Thus, this piece is helpful in shedding light on the root cause of the problem and the "players" involved.
Good rant. Right on the money!
Not a chapter in our history to be proud of, but for sheer numbers, it is dwarfed by the Holocaust. The history and horrors of the Holocaust are more recent, but Jews don't use mass Nazi genocide as an excuse to behave badly.
That is true to a degree. Those boycotts worked in areas where blacks were sizable. In my hometown they were nearly 50%
Now, they are almost 80%
What we are seeing today is an outgrowth of gov't "nanny care" as foisted by the democraps (during FDR) and their "plantation mentality" to preserve dependence, and reward with handouts in the from of welfare, and encourage the departure of fathers from the home
Very, very, very well said!

I'm calling a Major BS job here. I work with African-Americans that are true descendants of slaves, their behavior and attitudes are NOTHING like those of the people we saw in the video footage after Katrina. They are too intelligent and self-sufficient to ever behave in a manner like those people in NO.
I call it RTGALS -- Refusal To Get A Life Syndrome.
My ancestors were slaves, too. That crappy excuse is just that -- an excuse to be a violent bum.
