I read the advertisement in the Union-Tribune for the annual Miramar Air Show Oct. 14, 15 and 16, and my jaw dropped in disbelief.
I just don't understand how the Blue Angels can justify fueling and flying these jets in their annual celebration given President Bush's plea to Americans to cut back on fuel usage.
Surely there is something better that can be done with our military manpower other than a boastful display of flying skills, like perhaps airlifting supplies and materials to aid the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Am I missing something here? Perhaps the thunder that we'll feel and hear when the Blue Angels fly overhead will be the sounds of the gods crying.
I've only seen the Blue Angels practice from a distance.
But I saw the Thunderbirds a long time ago at an air show in Aviano AFB. They were flying F-100 Super Sabers.
I would rather cut liberal welfare programs than reduce any funding for the Blue Angels, Black Knights, or Thunderbirds.
Don't call me "Shirley".
When the fighters light up the burners as they pass by, we still say, "that's the sound of freedom"!
This is one of those dimwits that will be first in line to be critical of the draft if it gets reinstated. The Blue Angels are a powerful recruitment tool for the Navy. 21 Years ago, I saw the Blue Angels flying A-4 Skyhawks at the Quonset Naval Air Station. Within a month I enlisted, served for six years flying on sub-hunters, and was honorably discharged. It was the most difficult/rewarding 6 years of my life. I may have decided otherwise, had I not gone to that airshow.
Strafing her house?
Reminds me of an incident which occurred early into the Clinton administration. The White House staff attended an event in which there was a military flyover. One of the Clintonistas (hey, maybe it was Sylvia!) complained about the "military jets". Another Clintonista smiled and said "That's OK. They're OUR jets now!"

I'm pretty sure that was Ron Silver.
amen
recruiting tool - yes
but they are also an operational unit that can be armed and deployed globally in something like IIRC <24 hours. There are many units that are constantly training to be ready when called upon. The angels and T-birds just happen to be good advertising too.
Sylvia will be on the plaintiff's side when the ACLU sues the Navy to drop the name "Angels".
