One other thing, an intelligent catcher tags the guy on anything, and I mean anything close; it's just what a catcher does on a third strike like that. Josh Paul made a mistake in not taking a very simple precaution.
That umpire had trouble speaking at the press conference....that would be asking too much of him.
If the dirt had mosture in it that might explain why no puff.........

Al, I'm with you on this one, touch the ground or not, the catcher should always make that tag just to be sure; Molina would have. It was close enough to do it anyway.
Look at the pictures Hole in one posted, Piersynski is wheeling around to look at the umpire as the catcher runs off -- meaning 1. HE never heard OUT! and 2. He obviously heard and/or saw something else (most likely NO CATCH!)
This has nothing to do with the lack Sox and that is an ignorant comment to make.
1) How about the pathetic Angels that couldn't get a 3rd out AFTER THIS CALL.
2) The game was still Tied with two outs at that point.
3) How about a player is not out until he is at the steps of the dugout according to the umpires press conference.
4) How about the pathetic pitch selection that scored the final HIT and scored the RBI for the white sox.
5) How about the pathetic catcher not getting the ball out of his glove to throw down to second for the stolen base right afterward.
You Angels fans are pathetic comparing this to the black sox.
6) The Umpire called a strike which it was.
7) The Umpire clearly points to first base, that is not a third out call. he never said the word out.
8) How about blaming the pathetic catcher who is the one who made the mistake of not throwing down to first.
And.....Face it, the White Sox are the only ones who did anything right, which is running to first base on a dropped third strike.
You don't like it, too bad, suck it up and face Game Three.
But stop with the ignorant black sox comments, it adds nothing to your alleged claims other than the fact that some here don't know the rules of baseball.

Not the team; the umpire. Missed calls are a part of the game. I wrote the Cook County piece just to get in a slam at the DemocRATS. Don't get excited.

What's infuriating is that they were totally focused on the "change of direction" of the ball which is really pointless when you consider that the umpire called the third strike/out. He didn't reverse himself until the team was leaving the field. I've have a heck of a lot more respect for the umpires if they would just face up to what they did honestly instead of trying to squirm out of it. I didn't like the look on the home plate umpire's face at that PC one little bit. I think he is very aware of what he did.
The umpire called strike three, but as I'm sure you're aware, whether or not Pierzynski had reached safely, the play would still go in the books as a strikeout. The umpire has to account for every pitch, just as the official scorer has to account for every base gained by a batter-runner.
The umpire signaled strike three because Pierzynski swung at the ball. He had no option. But there were eight Angels facing the play who could and should have seen the umpire point to first base, and a catcher who should have realized that in a 1-1 game in an ALCS, you make sure of the out by tagging the batter anyway. That's common practice.
In short, you're right. It is not cheating to run out a play.

Everybody is heading for their dugouts, including the batter, until the batter turns and takes off toward first - - yet the umpire has remained in place rather than head for his water bottle or whatever. It looks to me like the umpire didn't believe that the inning was necessarily over.
And I still do not understand why the Angels watched the guy run to first base without reacting? They had plenty of chance to go pick up the ball and throw him out.

Watch the full replay. Even after he calls the strike and then signals the out...as the batter reaches first base, the home plate ump is striding to the mound shaking his head and signalling with his right hand that the ball is dead and the play is over. The batter was out.
The mechanics of the hp ump on that play were identical to his on that infamous play in the 9th.
