WE ARE REPUBLICANS AND CONSERVATIVES who supported the election of George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004. Today, we respectfully urge that the nomination of Harriet Miers to the United States Supreme Court be withdrawn.
The next justice of the Supreme Court should be a person of clear, consistent, and unashamed conservative judicial philosophy.
The next justice should be a person of unquestioned personal and political independence.
The next justice should be someone who has demonstrated a deep engagement in the constitutional issues that regularly come before the Supreme Court and an appreciation of the originalist perspective on those issues.
The next justice should be a person of the highest standard of intellectual and legal excellence.
For all Harriet Miers. many fine qualities and genuine achievements, we the undersigned believe that she is not that person. An attempt to push her nomination through the Senate will only split the Republican party, damage the Bush presidency, and cast doubts upon the Court itself.
Sometimes Americans elect Republican presidents, sometimes we elect Democratic presidents. Whatever the differences between the parties, surely we can at least agree on this: Each party owes America its best. There is a wide range of truly outstanding legal talents who share the presidents judicial philosophy. We believe that on second thought President Bush can do better for conservatism, for the Supreme Court, for America.
So?

The Senate can 'advise and consent' any jolly way it feels like.
I scanned the thread, but didn't see where anyone ever answered if Frum is a citizen of the United States. If he's not then it's pretty ironic to have a Canadian using "we Republicans" and demanding his exboss pony up.
Tacky tacky tacky.
---So?---
My little brother used to do that when he was about 4.

Yeah, you could wind up with Gonzales.
Gotta love that First Amendment. (And no fair telling Harriet what it says before her exams!)

No, what we conservatives have been arguing all along is that the pick is the President's, and that the Senate should allow that pick to come to an up-or-down vote.
And now, many (very many) of us are saying that when and if this particular nominee comes to the Senate floor, she should be voted way down.

Anyone who recognizes that the President serves the people and is accountable to them for his decisions, raise your hand.
"Hm? Oh, sorry chum, I wasn't listening.... too busy workin' HARD, workin' HARD.... what was the question again?"
I agree with the President 9/10 times.
I agree with the statements expressed in this petition. Nuff said.
Regardless of this petition, Bush isn't going to withdraw this nomination, much to the chagrin of the lynch mob at NRO. I think in time, we'll be reading pundits writing about the mistakes that they made in underestimating the judgement of President Bush.
Given George Bushs other judicial nominations have been pretty good (conservative), why do some people think Harriet Miers isn't?
Sorry not proof of anything. Care to make a case why she is unqualified to be on SC other then "She is Bush's pick and I am mad at Bush"?
I think that her main qualification (in the eyes of this administration) is the fact that she went to SMU. This is the only qualification I can come up with after following the news for the past few days. SMU is where Laura Bush received her bachelor's degree, served on their Board Of Trustees, where "SMU dedicated the Laura Bush Promenade, a sitting and garden area outside SMUs Fondren Library Center. Texas Governor George W. Bush funded the promenade as a Christmas gift honoring his wifes contributions to the advancement of literacy and literature...", where there is no doubt George W's presidential library will be built, and of course Harriet Myers' presence on the USSC will permanently elevate the status of the SMU law school.
"Governor Bush gave the address at SMUs 84th annual commencement ceremony. He began his speech by saying: The best decision I made in life was to marry into the SMU family.
The hits just keep on piling on.
