Petition for the Withdrawal of the Nomination of Harriet Miers to the U.S. Supreme Court
NRO ^ | 10/12/05 | David Frum

Posted on 10/12/2005 5:26:46 PM PDT by StatenIsland

WE ARE REPUBLICANS AND CONSERVATIVES who supported the election of George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004. Today, we respectfully urge that the nomination of Harriet Miers to the United States Supreme Court be withdrawn.

The next justice of the Supreme Court should be a person of clear, consistent, and unashamed conservative judicial philosophy.

The next justice should be a person of unquestioned personal and political independence.

The next justice should be someone who has demonstrated a deep engagement in the constitutional issues that regularly come before the Supreme Court — and an appreciation of the originalist perspective on those issues.

The next justice should be a person of the highest standard of intellectual and legal excellence.

For all Harriet Miers. many fine qualities and genuine achievements, we the undersigned believe that she is not that person. An attempt to push her nomination through the Senate will only split the Republican party, damage the Bush presidency, and cast doubts upon the Court itself.

Sometimes Americans elect Republican presidents, sometimes we elect Democratic presidents. Whatever the differences between the parties, surely we can at least agree on this: Each party owes America its best. There is a wide range of truly outstanding legal talents who share the president’s judicial philosophy. We believe that on second thought President Bush can do better — for conservatism, for the Supreme Court, for America.

With all this hype over Ms. Miers, yes, we could put our efforts into much bigger items. But when the people who say they are in our own party are so full of themselves instead of moving on to get things done in America we are in sad shape.

I belive in President Bush and I stand beside him.

I'm signing the petition. We'll see which side blinks first.

So you guys actually believe there's a chance Bush will back down, and her name will be withdrawn? If any more evidence were needed that those on your side are wearing blinders, that would definitely seal the deal.

Unless something blows up at the hearings, here is what will happen. Miers will receive confirmation by about the same margin Roberts did.

And we will have several days of numerous vanities about never voting Republican again, largely by those who have posted such vanities repeatedly in the past.

I don't know about anyone else but it's time to impeach the President for nominating such a monster. How DARE she actually add a handwritten note of gratitude to the governor of her state! Oh the depravity!

Good grief.

as someone with a huge, huge personality and an ego to go along with it

Or it could mean that she is confident in who she and what she stands for

What else has been known to get their attention?

Reasoned persuasion, backed up with credible threats of finding ways to implement the ideals one is promoting.

The current GOP-power elite knows somthing is afoot, and it will fight tooth and nail against an incursion of social and constitutional and small government conservatives. They'll get the message - but sending the petitions initiated by the fired WH speech writer will just piss them off. It's not productive.

Listen, it just my opinion. I don't want to be your leader. I think the petition is counter productive for reasons of human interaction and sociology - but I know as much about that as brain surgery. I could be all wet ;-)

But you can't just let a constitutional process play out?

This is all part of the constitutional process. If the President withdraws the nomination, that is every bit as constitutional as if he sticks with her and the Senate confirms her or rejects her. All the Constitution stipulates is that he nominate judges, and appoint them provided he have the concurrence of the Senate. No other material details are specified.

Upon looking further on the web site, I did find some other "options."

Some additional options:

Pundit who can't hold a real job
Bitter Buchanan Brigadier
Ross Perot's Cray-Z Aunt
Leaking Senate Staffer
Crying Senate Staffer
Paranoid Bush-Hater
Bitter Defeated SCOTUS Nominee
True Conservative Who Believes Only New England Law Degrees Count
World Nut Daily Columnist

the hearings, the hearings, wait till the hearings-- all i hear from the pro miers crowd. it is a way to stifle dissent
she will likely invoke the ginsburg rule, and even if she didnt-- these hearings do not provide an insight as to if she will not drift leftward within 5-10 years. *that* is the concern, based on previous positions of supporting affirmative action and the creation of "womens studies" lecture series, trepidation is warranted

Miers will receive confirmation by about the same margin Roberts did.

Whether or not she's confirmed is still an open question, but if she is, I'll wager that it will not be by the same or greater margin as Roberts.

What I object to is the object of the petition

Petitions are written and signed by the powerless, impotent and irrelevent. This petition is every bit as laughable as petitions signed demanding Bush pull out of Iraq or declaring Berzerkly a "nucular"-free zone. Utter waste of bandwidth.

If the Miers Lynch Mob is reduced to signing petitions, they have lost.

Doesn't matter whether or not you care. You'll still have to hear it anyway.

We need a professional to look at her handwriting. I'm sceptical of graphology as I am of astrology, but this sample looks bold and revealing as anything out there. Question is, revealing what? Is there a doctor in the house?
