WE ARE REPUBLICANS AND CONSERVATIVES who supported the election of George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004. Today, we respectfully urge that the nomination of Harriet Miers to the United States Supreme Court be withdrawn.
The next justice of the Supreme Court should be a person of clear, consistent, and unashamed conservative judicial philosophy.
The next justice should be a person of unquestioned personal and political independence.
The next justice should be someone who has demonstrated a deep engagement in the constitutional issues that regularly come before the Supreme Court and an appreciation of the originalist perspective on those issues.
The next justice should be a person of the highest standard of intellectual and legal excellence.
For all Harriet Miers. many fine qualities and genuine achievements, we the undersigned believe that she is not that person. An attempt to push her nomination through the Senate will only split the Republican party, damage the Bush presidency, and cast doubts upon the Court itself.
Sometimes Americans elect Republican presidents, sometimes we elect Democratic presidents. Whatever the differences between the parties, surely we can at least agree on this: Each party owes America its best. There is a wide range of truly outstanding legal talents who share the presidents judicial philosophy. We believe that on second thought President Bush can do better for conservatism, for the Supreme Court, for America.
"I have a job and it's in the legal profession."
But the important question is whether you are a practitioner.
What are you planning, an overthrow?
To who?
I just think, in this case, it is not the most effective tool for communication - and that Frum is not the guy conservatives really want to have carrying the meassage back.
"In your face" does not cause the country club conservatives to compromise with social conservatives, any more that the GOP-power elite gains when its in the face of social conservatives.
The conservative message is persausive. But all ideas need to be "sold," and this is a crappy way to sell the idea. YMMV.
"To who?"
You means as in "to who is may concern?"
"And they just couldn't say that?"
They should have. They're elitists so I'm not surprised. I may disagree with the wording / approach but full steam ahead on their goal.
What else has been known to get their attention?
Greater than nominating someone of Miers' caliber?!
Surely you jest.
unashamed ???
Go to hell Frum
"What are you planning, an overthrow?"
A little coup, now and then, never hurt anyone. [ \ sarcasm ]
Good. I don't care.
"The Party" stands for nothing except an explosion in spending, bigger government every year, acquiring more power and control and getting reelected.
Screw that; we don't need two Big Stupid Government parties. But that's what we've got.
Yes, as in, unashamed to take a public stand on something.
This lady (and she's no lady, she's a lawyer!) looks to me (and I only play one on the Internet) as someone with a huge, huge personality and an ego to go along with it. Look at the size of those letters, those curves that intrude on the typed text, this is a person that could run you over, bud, without having to driving a moving vehicle!
:-)
---So... believing too fervently in a cause might lead to offenses against public order. Got it, I'll be sure to keep that in mind, and not let myself be carried that far. I think I can confidently say the same about my fellow freepers, at least on this issue.---
But you can't just let a constitutional process play out? Free speech and the writing of petitions is in contention here. What I object to is the object of the petition, the removal of a Presidential nominee before going to the Senate. Those opposed to the Miers nomination claim the are opposed out of worry for the Constituion and the Republic. Yet these same people come now wanting to short circuit the process. Many are saying why even have a hearing! Hearings are worthless, but pass me that petitition!
Allowing a person to present her case before being found guilty is against the principles of conservatives??
Since when?
The letter below really nailed it for me. The "You and Laura Are the Greatest!" along the bottom-left margin is a bit too "kissing up" for my style. And underscoring the word "greatest" is too sappy. If you want to communicate that "You and Laura Are the Greatest," put it in the actual letter; don't handwrite such a compliment off to the side.

Guess you have not served in government...this is a common practice called personalizing the notes. Often times the note itself is written by staffers.
I would not get upset with this...particularly since Miers knew the then Governor and his wife very well.
Free speech and the writing of petitions is (not) in contention here.
