MIERS & LAST-MINUTE DROP-OUTS (Priscilla Owen did not withdraw her name)
National Review Online: The Corner ^ | 10-12-2005 | Kathryn Jean Lopez

MIERS & LAST-MINUTE DROP-OUTS [Kathryn Jean Lopez] A journalist friend just spoke with a top Texas lawyer who spoke with Priscilla Owen last week. He says that she "most emphatically" did not withdraw her name from consideration to the Court. If the White House spin is that Harriet Miers got the job because nobody else wanted it, it would seem that the White House is at a desperation point. Posted at 12:07 PM

Priscilla Owen is obviously a Bush hater. She's also elitist and sexist. She did withdraw and now she's saying she didn't simply to make the President look bad. The President said to trust him and that's enough for me.

Whew, your head really does feel light as air when you type things like that.

LOL! Not only that she must be part of the "anti-Meirs" crowd!

This may be moot, even if true. I believe I read recently that the WH was told by members of the gang of 14 on BOTH sides of the aisle that Owens and Brown would be filibustered. If we have a beef, it is with the gang of 14...and they give cover to the partisans on both sides with their special interest supporters.

I contend that Bush was left with few options that would be "confirmable." Wanna make a difference? Get a more conservative Senate. I know this leads us to "Bush is the one who supported Spector over Toomey". And believe me, I feel for everyone in PA, I am fortunate to be in a state with Bond and Talent.

I still think that it is little short of amazing that we have two Republican senators in a Blue State like Pennsylvania. If we REALLY want to make our efforts count, we will work to get rid of Democrats in hardcore red states like Conrad, Johnson, etc. Why beat your brains out in Blue states? Trying to defeat an idiot like Patty Bin Laden Murray taught me the futility of that strategy.

Lets get the red states more solid. 60 needs to be the goal, or 51 CONSERVATIVE senators.

cite some sort of personal reason to withdraw her nomination.

There's no way. No one would buy it. It's up to the Senate.

J.C. Watts is on Sean's nationally syndicated radio show right now, trying-and failing-to come up with a rationale for the Miers nod.

Ooh!

He just repeated the White House talking point de jour, i.e. "we couldn't find anyone willing to go through this."

Priscilla Owen is a quality candidate.
Harriet Miers is a crony candidate.

"A journalist friend just spoke with a top Texas lawyer who spoke with Priscilla Owen last week."

You guys have aggressively argued that we should not "trust" George Bush, yet now we're supposed to "trust" this? It's a sure sign this isn't about trust but something much deeper.

Oh this coming from the NOR and MS Lopez who on November 2nd 2004 told us that her sources told her that Kerry was going to win BIG. Give me a f***ing break NRO. You are the New York Times of the conservative media.

" Isn't his main point that Miers wasn't the best choice, but rather, the only option available to President Bush?"

Well Miers didn't make the top 80 so maybe if she withdraws someone in the top 80 will reconsider.

---So this woman... spoke with this guy...who spoke with this guy...who spoke to Owen.

Well if that's not an irrefutable source I don't know what is!---

Same thing we were expected to accept when it came to miers' bonafides on things like religion and voting for reagan.

What, it's not an acceptable standard now?

That [White House spin is that Harriet Miers got the job because nobody else wanted it] over-states things by quite a bit. The anti-Miers folks are over-the-top. Again.

Hey buddy, I didn't care then what they said, and I don't care now. If someone wants to apologize, fine. I wont stay up nights waiting for it. And just to clear up the current dispute:

THE SHORT LIST WAS 5 WOMEN, 3 declined, 1 was disqualified on her history, and Miers was left holding the trophy.

Ya think anyone will believe me now? I wont hold my breath.

That rumor has as much credible independent evidence as the one at the top of this thread. But neither side has a monopoly on "over the top."

The White House has been feeding dis-information for the last few days through Dobson and "little birdies."

Freepers have taken the bait. BIG TIME.

"I heard from a friend of a friend of Priscilla Owen" is a more appropriate start to an urban legend than a news story.

I haven't read any official spin from the WH. Pukin Dog did have some hints of info that that might be the case with SOME. No one said, to my memory (to include Pukin Dog) that EVERY candidate withdrew. That would be unusual.

The democrats said they would fillibuster Owen. Then the Rino's came out publically and said they would not support a "ultra right wing" candidate. That was code for "pro-life".(I will look for the link)

We only have 55 Republicans, 51 are needed (assuming you get it out of committee). Would you go to battle with the likes of Snowe, Collins, Shays, Chaffee, McCain, & Voinovich to back you up.

Which of those two listed above would you think could be swayed?

I can only imagine that conversation!

The chickens have come home to roost for the White House. After literally hundreds of thousands of conservatives gave blood sweat and tears for re-election based on the PROMISE to nominate people like Scalia and Thomas, they give us Meirs and expect us to sit down like little lap dogs?

I don't think so. We have been kicked around too much by this administration and it is about time they are held to account.
