Bush: Miers' Religion Cited in Court Nod
AP ^ | October 12, 2005 | NEDRA PICKLER

Posted on 10/12/2005 9:40:01 AM PDT by West Coast Conservative

President Bush said Wednesday that Harriet Miers' religious beliefs figured into her nomination to the Supreme Court as a top-ranking Democrat warned against any "wink and a nod" campaign for confirmation.

"People are interested to know why I picked Harriet Miers," Bush told reporters at the White House. "Part of Harriet Miers' life is her religion."

Bush, speaking at the conclusion of an Oval Office meeting with visiting Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski, said that his advisers were reaching out to conservatives who oppose her nomination "just to explain the facts." He spoke on a day in which conservative James Dobson, founder of Focus on Family, said he had discussed the nominee's religious views with presidential aide Karl Rove.

Thomas Jefferson was one great mind and man, of many. He believed in a Creator-God, the Giver of All Things. Thomas Jefferson would be appalled at what has happened in our courts of law, the "legalized" death of millions of slaughtered babies in the womb and the death by starvation of Terri Schiavo. He would be appalled at McCain-Feingold and the so-called right to sodomy. He would likely disbar and disband the 9th circuit, and probably hang them as traitors.

He, like our other Founders, understood that Rights are Given by God Almighty, not granted by mere men. He, like our other Founders, was willing to stake his life on his belief that Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness were the Gift of God and not of the King. He understood that laws were to be made in legislatures, where men elected by and accountable to the People met, not by the select few in courtrooms, and that when those few usurped their role, they were to be impeached, overruled, removed, and tried for the criminals they proved themselves to be by their behavior.

Honestly... the only real qualification in my mind is this... "can we count on her to vote the way we want". That's it. That's all it's about. It's a political court influenced by politicians and a host of other things. So it all comes down to can I count on their vote.

Yeah, but that has nothing to do with judicial philosophy, and even Jimmah says he is an evangelical, born-again Christian (and no doubt has a legion of admirers to testify to that). I think you're putting too much weight onto the idea that religious beliefs will convert into judicial action.

And I know and interact daily with a number of truly good people who are conservative, evangelical Christians. That doesn't mean I would support their nomination for the Supreme Court.

You completely misconstrued my point. Millions of Americans believe in Almighty God and are religious including myself. That alone is NOT enough to nominate someone to the Supreme Court.

So the fact that she has no qualifications and record is more reliable and indicator of what she will do rather than a judge with a record? Right, I understand completely.

Just admit it already, this nomination is a joke.

By your arguments John Jay should not have served.

I just want her to read the constitution as literal as she reads the bible. That's what we're promised. If that's true, we got no problem.

You may be a laughingstock. But not because of this innocuous remark. "Part" of her life.

Antis always ready to make a mountain out of a molehill are hilarious.

Yeah, Luttig or McConnell or even JRB could change on the Supreme Court -- but at least we have something more than "trust me" to go on for them. You know how they stand NOW on many Constitutional issues -- we don't know that about Ms. Miers at all. The fact that anyone is relying upon her religious credentials and a "trust me" to yield conservative judicial dividends is worrying.

I'm also against appointing someone 61 years old to the court. If GWB really wanted a legacy, he would put someone on there in their late 40's early 60's.

I don't think it's a joke. I think she potentially will be the most conservative on the court. I'd guess that she will absolutely be more conservative than Roberts. Roberts is the one I worry about, because my experience is that people who are smarter than everybody else are the ones that you shouldn't trust. And he's definitely smarter than everybody else in washington.

By your arguments John Jay should not have served.

That's a ridiculous statement.
As author of the Federalist Papers, John Jay was one of the Framers.

It just comes down to a comfort level.... are we more comfortable that an person basically unknown to the president but with a good paper trail ..... or a person known and judged by the president based on that personal knowledge and friendship. I mean which of these are we most comfortable sending to the court for life?? I dont' know...

She has her entire legal career, but nobody seems to care to discuss that.

A legal career is not the same thing as legal scholarship. Being able to drive a car doesn't make one a mechanic, even if you've been the President's personal chauffeur.
