WASHINGTON, DC -- The Independent Womens Forum supports the presidents nomination today of Harriet Miers to fill the seat vacated by retiring Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day OConnor.
"Ms. Miers has had a long and distinguished career as one of the foremost lawyers in the country makes her a well qualified candidate. Members from both sides of the aisle have recognized her professional achievements and qualifications and recommended her to the President as a nominee," said IWF senior vice president Michelle Bernard.
"While IWF supports the nomination of Harriet Miers to be associate justice of the Supreme Court, IWF rejects the feminist argument that the seat to which she was nominated is a 'woman's seat.'" continued Bernard. "In originally nominating John Roberts to replace Justice O'Connor, the President laid to rest the notion that any one sex or ethnic group owns a particular seat on the Court. Having established that principle last summer, and having elevated John Roberts to be chief justice, the President was free to make this selection free from concerns of gender politics."
"The president selected his trusted friend and attorney Harriet Miers. We do not doubt that Ms. Miers is qualified for the post, and for that reason, the Senate should act quickly to confirm her," added Bernard.
"Only time will tell whether Ms. Miers will be a justice who understands the difference between law and politics and who exercises her judicial power with restraint. We are cautiously optimistic."
Well the big dog has spoken! (Please excuse my word choice.)
The Independent Women's Forum was established to combat the women-as-victim, pro-big-government ideology of radical feminism. We seek to restore, strengthen, and extend that which promotes women's well being by advancing the principles of self-reliance, political freedom, economic liberty, and personal responsibility.
Your pleas for reason with many on FR will go unheeded. Some have simply gone over the cliff. Anybody or any organization choosing to support Miers is immediately dubbed a Bushbot or a Kool-Aid drinker. Conservative stalwarts like Leonard Leo, James Dobson, Jay Sekulow, Hugh Hewitt and others have immediately have had their conservative bona fides questioned in the most insulting way.
As Bush said yesterday he's not going to withdraw her name from consideration and she WILL be confirmed regardless of the hols from the madding crowd.
The group Barbara Olson started endorses Meirs. Bunch of cronies right with your DUmmie rhetoric.
Excuse your choice? Sure.
Concerned Women for America opposes her nomination, so I guess that means you folks will have to stop relying on that "she's a born-again, biblethumping evangelical" selling point, huh?
