Suspect Held in Ga. Tech Blast (busy day around Atlanta, huh?)

A person identified as a witness to the placement of three explosives at Georgia Tech is now being called a suspect in the case, according to a spokeswoman for the Atlanta Police Department.

Georgia Tech Police investigators took the so-called witness in for questioning early Tuesday morning, the spokeswoman said. During the course of their interview, they changed their characterization from witness to suspect.

Three explosive devices were found in a courtyard between two Georgia Tech dormitories on the East Campus Monday morning. One of the devices exploded, injuring the grounds worker who found them inside a plastic bag. Two other devices were detonated by a bomb squad.

The custodian suffered ringing to the ears and was treated at a local hospital. The events led to a temporary evacuation of 100 students from their dormitories.

"It is a terrorist act at this point and depending on the outcome of the investigation it potentially could become a federal violation as well," Major C.W. Moss of the Atlanta Police Department said Monday.

The explosives were made up of chemicals placed inside plastic bottles and could have seriously injured someone, officials said. Numerous agencies were on the Georgia Tech campus to help in the investigation.

"It will be a joint investigation between the Atlanta Police Department, the Georgia Tech Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force. Every possible lead will be followed," said Major Moss.

Well at least they admit right off the bat that it is a terrorist attack. Whether placed by a homegrown loony or an Al Quaeda operative, bombings are always a terrorist act.

Tell that to the doofus David Boren!

"It's not in either state. The situation in GA was a college prank"

It may not be Terrorism in GA, but nobody will convince the majority of those in the know that OK was not a Terrorist Attack gone wrong.

I don't mean we should put a middle schooler in jail for this stuff, but maybe if the kid AND Mom/Dad had to do community service (pick up trash, paint low income people's homes for free, something onorous) the kids wouldn't think it was so cool, and Mom and/or Dad would pay a bit more attention to what Jr. was doing in their off time.

Sounds like a good plan to put a stop to stupid "hijinks!"

A student has confessed, been suspended and taken to jail. Man, you just can't have any fun anymore!

PhiKapMom for one and many others who live in OK and were at the OU stadium when this bomb went off.

Second those who have followed ALL the information on this since it happened.

Scrubbing a few public restrooms at highway stops and picking up trash at the park may cut down on the bomb threats and fun with noise makers..

I realize there is an overreaction to some of these "threats"..

We live in interesting times..Mistakes are made..I just hope the attention getters get some more productive ways to get attention.

So let me get this straight. I attend a football game and I'm automatically in the know? 80,000 other people must be in the know just because they attended. But wait, the reports are they didn't know why the attendees of the football game were being held momentarily before they could leave. Guess they weren't 'in the know'.

And of course we have local news reporters reporting but mysteriously none of it has made major headlines anywhere that I've seen (except of course maybe a blurb from Fox but even they're not touching it. And would you really believe anything that's on Fox, tabloid central of 24 hour news?).

Of course don't get me wrong, I'm not going to believe anything the national government tells me. But I'm also not going to hunt down for 'possible' meetings that have little to no concrete evidence of any wrongdoing. Sounds just like a kook that needed attention and perhaps thought, on his own mind you, that he was more important than he really was.

Great suggestion....keep in mind that most juvenile court judges use public service requirements as part of a sentence......

Punishment serves as a small deterent to crime....the larger influence is family and instilled morals and ethics...

YOu're probably right. However, in light of things in this day and age, I would rather a bit of overkill than underkill. (wow, what a bad choice of words, I guess!)
And besides, let's make the kids WORRY about doing this kind of thing. Make THEM pay for wasting resources...

Well, having raised 3 boys I know all about boys being boys. I also had one wild child myself, but honestly, if he had ever blown something up that caused damage I would have FULLY expected to be responsible for it. I brought him into this world, and he's MY responsiblity.
I hold to my statement. Kids *pranks* that cause damage should cost the kids AND their parents in some way. That's part of all trying to live in a civilized society.

Well that's all good but the ramifications are serious for the offender.....

These college students that were playing a prank that just 10 years ago would have resulted in a a charge of misdemeanor mischief and a school suspension/expulsion could now face federal terrorism charges.......

The laws and enforcement are out of control....don't fasten your seatbelt, face a fine...smoke in your car with a child present, reckless endangerment of a minor....

My original comment was more about the federalization of laws and the over exuberant response from law enforcement.

You;re right. However, there has been so much coverup over the Norman terrorist incident that it is really difficult to believe the authorities' version on anything. Such speculation would stop if the authorities were more honest. For example, in the Norman incident, they kept claiming that Hinrichs used a pipe bomb (filld with black powder) while it came out later that the cops knew about the composition (TATP) and Hinrichs' attempts to buy Ammonium Nitrate. Just my two cents...

I agree. I refused to let this child get a drivers license until he was old enough to get insurance w/o cosigner.

But I just do not think most young men equate their high jinks with terrorism. In fact, these days, it isn't only the boys. I just spoke with a father who is worried sick about his daughter's actions leaving him liable for someone's death or severe injury. Again, this child was not badly raised, but simply doesn't think.

I think there already are some laws that hold parents responsible for the damage done by minor children. The trick is to get the kids to understand that this is serious, could happen to them and could impact their entire lives before they do damage. It is impossible to keep your children under lock and key and total surveillance at all times and so many just do not understand consequences until they actually experience them. Then, it's too late.

Tech Student Arrested in Soda Bottle Bomb Scare

Oct 11, 2005, 06:05 PM

(CBS 46) --- Georgia Tech authorities today announced an arrest in the case of some soda bottle "bombs" found on campus.

Authorities say Theodore Hollet, a freshman engineering student from Pennsylvania, has confessed to making the chemical filled bottles in his dorm room. He was taken to the Fulton County jail, facing criminal charges. He's also been suspended.

About 100 students were evacuated from Cloudman and Glenn residence halls after the janitor found the suspicious bottle yesterday morning. The janitor was slightly hurt picking up one of the "bombs."

Hollet's alleged motives have not been disclosed.

"Move along now"

Yeah, after I saw the treatment this incident got in the AP this morning I was ALMOST Speechless. They wouldn't even use the world "explosion" or "explosives". Kind of hard to trust ANYTHING the AP says when you see both sides of their articles... Too bad the average American doesn't have the access we have to these articles. It would become very hard for the "reporters" at the AP to keep their jobs if they did.

For a comprehensive summary of what
has been reported to date please check out:

Details about the bombs found at OU, UCLA, and Georgia Tech, with discussion about Al Qaeda's last taped threat. Will be updated later tonight.
