A person identified as a witness to the placement of three explosives at Georgia Tech is now being called a suspect in the case, according to a spokeswoman for the Atlanta Police Department.
Georgia Tech Police investigators took the so-called witness in for questioning early Tuesday morning, the spokeswoman said. During the course of their interview, they changed their characterization from witness to suspect.
Three explosive devices were found in a courtyard between two Georgia Tech dormitories on the East Campus Monday morning. One of the devices exploded, injuring the grounds worker who found them inside a plastic bag. Two other devices were detonated by a bomb squad.
The custodian suffered ringing to the ears and was treated at a local hospital. The events led to a temporary evacuation of 100 students from their dormitories.
"It is a terrorist act at this point and depending on the outcome of the investigation it potentially could become a federal violation as well," Major C.W. Moss of the Atlanta Police Department said Monday.
The explosives were made up of chemicals placed inside plastic bottles and could have seriously injured someone, officials said. Numerous agencies were on the Georgia Tech campus to help in the investigation.
"It will be a joint investigation between the Atlanta Police Department, the Georgia Tech Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force. Every possible lead will be followed," said Major Moss.
If this is a student prank (and I think it is) then they ought to hammer his butt. Also, I saw where the grounds keeper suffered damage to his hearing and burns on his hands. Hope he sues the crap out of someone.

If boy's fun and games causes damage to someone's hearing and burns..If boys who will be boys place the items where such damage can be done..then I am not amused..

Boys fun and games are getting totally out of hand. In Walla Walla WA, not far from where I live there has bee 5 bomb threats in the last few days. 2 in the Middle School and 3 at the High School.
No problem, planes bombs, they are all related in ways.
Seems to me that it would be ever so much more embarrassing to ignore a terrorist act. But that's just me.

We had a run of bomb threats at the HS I taught at right after Colombine. I know that kids do stupid things, but this is getting nuts (if these are all kid's pranks). I think if the kids (and their parents, if they are under age) were held REALLY accountable, maybe some of this stuff would end. I don't mean we should put a middle schooler in jail for this stuff, but maybe if the kid AND Mom/Dad had to do community service (pick up trash, paint low income people's homes for free, something onorous) the kids wouldn't think it was so cool, and Mom and/or Dad would pay a bit more attention to what Jr. was doing in their off time.

Explosives in plastic jugs? No shrapnel? Gave the groundskeeper ringing ears? Not any terrorists I ever heard of. If he's white, a goofy engineering student from Podunk,Indiana then you can bet DHD and all government agencies will paint him as one, though.

A dry ice bomb is not a "terrorist incident".
Custodians and security guards were very careful about examining anything in a soda bottle or wrapped in aluminum foil too closely. Stand back and poke it with a long stick was the usual method. And if you saw a helium balloon floating along, it probably contained hydrogen and a lit cigarette fuse and you stayed the )(*&*)&^ away from it.
None of these infernal devices were intended to do anything other than make noise and sometimes pretty sparkling streamers. Probably the worst thing any of them could have caused would have been minor burns.
With all of that said, I would hope that the Tech boys realize that the attitude towards ad hoc flash-bangs has changed a bit since the 70s. Obviously some of them do not.

The initial response is a squad car, the first officer that arrives identifies the objects, secures the area, then additional units are called as necessary with a supervisor. The bomb squad is then called for disposal.
To treat a pop bottle "bomb" as a terrorist threat is substantial overkill.

Noisemakers aren't lethal devices anymore than most class c fireworks are......
They are shutting down and evacuating schools now when they find a firecracker in some kid's locker. Bomb squad disposal for a "Blackcat"
My comment is related to the level of response by local law enforcement. Everything is over dramaticized for the "public's safety".
