Laura Bush says sexism possible in Miers criticism

COVINGTON, Louisiana (Reuters) - First lady Laura Bush joined her husband in defending his nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday and said it was possible some critics were being sexist in their opposition to Harriet Miers.

"That's possible, I think that's possible," Mrs. Bush said when asked on NBC's "Today Show" whether criticism that Miers lacked intellectual heft were sexist in nature. She said Miers' accomplishments as a lawyer were a role model to young women.

...

Mrs. Bush, who had publicly supported the nomination of a woman to the high court, noted that Miers had been president of the Texas Bar Association.

"I know Harriet well, I know how accomplished she is, I know how many times she's broken the glass ceiling herself. She is a role model for young women around our country," she said.

That's as silly as the "because she's a women" charge.

President Bush: "Today, I have withdrawn the nomination of Harriet Miers and ask you to support Laura Bush for Supreme Court."

Sorry, Laura---but a large number of those judges that the Conservatives are pointing out as alternatives to Miers ARE WOMEN--so your little attempt at "sexist lynching" won't fly.

Shhh. The kool-aide drinkers don't think we helped elect Bush, they know that we bring nothing to the table, and can't wait until we get out of "their" movement.

"Maybe the President should have told us, "Trust Laura."

Sexism refers to discrimination based on gender. Laura said she would like the next SCOTUS pick to be a woman, not a man. There is some argument that she is the sexist here.

Acts: Do you think her (Miers) opponents are sexist?

Howlin: I think trashing any and everybody who doesn't tow the extreme conservative line pretty much sucks.

I'm not sure you answered Acts' original question...

The Bush White House continues to dig its hole. I just can't fathom it.

"Despite all this, you still think "The treatment Miers is getting from the right is uncalled for at best and disgraceful to say the least." WOW!!!! You don't hold the conservative rank and file to a high standard, do you?"

Not when the President has a proven track record on putting Conservative judges on the court. The Republicans backed away from a fight and Bush is smart enough to know that Luttig, Brown and Owen will not be confirmed because of those 14 sellouts.

The Conservatives are playing to their base so their campaign contributions do not dry up. They are cutting off their own nose to spite their face.

I think Reagan said it best. "Trust but verify."

This sexism charge is beyond stoo-pid, is utter nonsense and insulting.

I agree, totally. When Sandra Day O'Conner was chosen, years ago, (like her views or not), nobody questioned that she was, and is, a qualified candidate and an intellectual.

My experience has been that women who are qualified and competent never have to worry about men or other qualified, competent women whining about "sexism". It's just the unqualified whiners who need some kind of excuse to get an advantage.

Laura disappointed here. That attitude is just SOOOOOO teachers union!

I didn't intend to; frankly, I've given up answering questions on BOTH sides.

We've got one side trashing anybody who questions them while they won't wait to hear the answers from this woman, and we've got the other side spreading rumors about Bush withdrawing her and NOT naming another appointment.

I can't tell who is dumber here anymore.

A lot of conservatives just wanted a fight, they wanted some on-your-face person like Janice Rogers Brown, and Bush gave them this mild-mannered grandmotherly type. It's all about image; the feisty conservatives underrate Miers because she seems soft and they don't trust her intellectual powers or her toughness. I do. I'm sick of the brazen Ann Coulter types who just offend people and make themselves the issue.

Some of us find it incredible that the President will send our men and women to die in Iraq, but he himself cowers from a battle in the Senate.

If nothing else, he owes it to the military votes that in large part elected him in 2000 to put on his manhood and fight for what's right.

I suppose that Michelle Malkin, Laura Ingraham and Ann Coulter, to name three high-profile opponents of the Miers nomination, are just sexist pigs.

I'm thinking maybe Ann Coulter is more qualified to be a Supreme Court Judge than is Ms. Miers.

I do not think the criticism of Laura on this is right.

READ HER STATEMENT.

She was trapped by a reporter who ASKED her if the criticism was a result of sexism.

If she answered no, she would, by default be accused of saying Miers wasn't qualified.

So she answered "That's possible." It's a dodge. Anyone who wants to read more into it is just looking for one more excuse to attack the President over this.

I AM DISAPPOINTED IN ALL OF YOU WHO CHECK YOUR PRINCIPLES AT THE DOOR. Disagree, think it's a horrible nomination...but for crying out loud—DON'T GIVE THE PRESS A PASS AS THEY ATTEMPT TO TORPEDO EVERYTHING YOU STAND FOR USING YOUR OWN THOUGHTLESSNESS.

Whew. I feel better.

Non-sequitur...this is like saying that we should teach elementary school with comic books because of superior readibility.

We have to lower our standards. It's not like we're in the majority or anything.
