They probably couldn't get into UGA. The standards are so much higher at UGA than tech.

It had Doritos and Catalina dressing :/ Maybe if chopped chicken had been used instead of hamburger...

I usually make the Best Foods classic potato salad, the rip off version of KFC's coleslaw, or a homemade Italian pasta salad.

The problem was the doritos and the meat.
I make mine with Fritos, beans, cheese, chopped tomatoes, lettuce, black olives, peppers, and catalina dressing.

...fail to realize that the fact that this person or persons left this device in a place where many could be hurt...

I think they knew it was a plastic bottle pressurized with the reaction of harmless common chemicals. I suspect they didn't think it through. If they intended to hurt someone, it would have been just as easy to make a pipe bomb filled with smokeless gunpowder and a timer made from a $5 Mickey Mouse watch. There were no shrapnel sources in the device. It was only capable of making noise.

Thank you for your measured reply. I still believe that they intended no harm. They should be punished accordingly. It just is not a matter for Homeland Security or the FBI. I'd rather have those guys tracking down the ones who do indeed have the intent to kill or maim.

When kids mess around with these things, they are learning something. Sometimes they learn what is not acceptable behavior. I think it would be smart to provide these "tinkerers" with some sort of supervised forum so that they could learn meaningful skills safely. I entered military service as a "quick learner" in explosives and demolitions because I did get an early start. There is nothing inherently wrong with this.

It is imperative that we assume that the vast majority of our citizens are good people. That is how we can justify the practical application of even the Second Amendment. It is not prudent to treat someone like the enemy just because they like things that go boom. It is better to guide and develop interest of any nature so that harm is not done to either the experimenter or to any hapless passerby. With the application of rigid "go to jail" rules, such creativity is stifled. The real trick is to encourage and foster this stuff without providing those who do intend to do harm with their tools. This is, once again, based upon the judgment of good leadership. Knee-jerk terrorist prosecution is not based upon judgment but rather the application of rules. Anyone can apply rules. Only the just can apply judgment.

Lots of dorm residents experimented with low-grade pyrotechnics when I was at Tech. This sounds like a freshman/sophomore prank.

"Anyone can apply rules. Only the just can apply judgment."

Such wisdom condensed into only ten words.

All of that is true Gingis - but when you have a campus full of students, the officials involved are going to err on the side of safety and get in the bomb squad. I don't know all of the particulars involved here - don't know if HLS automatically is called in on these matters or what - I didn't make the call - but we are going to have to disagree on this issue - I would rather they grabbed the offenders first and sorted out the details later, rather than letting a potentially dangerous person walk because they didn't "think" he meant harm

Then why didn't all three explode? I think this was shaking of chemicals causing a container to rupture from gas overpressure. I will SWAG it that it popped when he flung the bag into the dumpster but can't tell from the usual crappy reporting we are subjected to.

Life sucks for you, doesn't it?

Not in the least. How would you assume that? Just because it seems that most Americans, such as yourself, have lost their Foundation?

I did not change my life's philospohy just because some morons rammed airplanes into buildings full of people. I maintained my sense of proportion and my grounding in Constitutional principle. I do not fear every "pop" of a soda bottle nor the people who make them pop.

On the other hand, life sucks for you. You fear your fellow citizens, even to jump quickly to jail our youth as terrorists just because they act rashly. That is what youths do. I am sorry you don't understand this, as you should also feel ill that the Constitution is being set aside for fear right smack dab in the middle of "The Home of the Brave".

"I have picked up that the devices were chemical bombs in 2 liter soda bottles."

In the OU case they confiscated 13 plastic bottles from the trunk of Hinrichs car. A terrorism expert on Fox News the other day said that bombs usually made with these types of bottles are not that innocent (your reference to loud noise and mailboxes). The expert (don't know who exactly it was) said that if they are exploded say inside a bus it could easily kill 100 to 150 people...

I've yet to read through the rest of these posts, but let's hope it was not these types of devices that was found. Hopefully it is a prank of some sort...

I agree, this doesnt appear to be what I would consider terrorism and the response is way overblown, not surprising in light of the recent OK bomber.

Good practice for the real thing I suppose.

"The custodian found the three devices about 9 a.m. in a plastic-type garbage bag, Moss said. When he picked up the bag, one exploded, as it was designed to do when handled. The explosives were made up of chemicals placed inside plastic bottles and could have seriously injured someone, officials said. Numerous agencies were on the Georgia Tech campus to search for suspects.

"It will be a joint investigation between the Atlanta Police Department, the Georgia Tech Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force. Every possible lead will be followed," said Major Moss.

About 100 students were evacuated from the Cloudman and Glenn dormitories, according to school spokeswoman Amelia Gambino."

Except it would take a heck of a lot more than a couple of water bottles and a firecracker to turn a dumpster into shrapnel.

Depends on what is the water bottles. Two liters, or even a 1/2 liter, of Nitro would probably completely shred the dumpster, and maybe parts of the adjacent dorms and two liters of TATP would at least burst the dumpsters (which none the less are generally pretty sturdy). But there were 3 bottles involved in this case. Probably nothing that energetic though. The article linked at #20 said nothing about firecrackers, but only about "chemicals" in the bottles.

this sounds like harmless fooling around with fireworks that has been blown WAY out of proportion.

It may have been blown out of proportion, but I'd hardly call something that sends a guy to the hospital "harmless".
