"This Lutheran/Methodist terror thing all started when some Lutheran crashed a Methodist potluck and brought carrot-raisin salad."

Well, that was the PR story, actually it all started when the Methodists raided the Sunday morning coffee period and drank the 17 gallons of coffee meant for the Lutherans. After that, there can be no peace.

don't dare to tell me that I'm wrong for caring or being worried

I wouldn't dream of this. You have evey right to be concerned, and to expect appropriate punishment for misdeeds. Subjecting every incident to terrorist suspicions and punishment levels is not responsible leadership. Incidents MUST be weighed against intent and punishment should fit the crime. A prank gone wrong is not the same thing as making a weapon with the intentto kill or maim someone.

Now, as a mother, put the shoe on the other foot. Assume your child made a small explosive device just to have some fun, knowing that the device was too small to cause any harm. To his surprise, his device throws a pebble into someone's eye. Would you have this mighty Nation throw him in prison without a trial as a terrorist simply because they could?

A child or a young adult in college Gingis? Two very different situations.

A 19 or 20 year old knows full well that this type of "prank" could injure or kill someone - very different from a child with a bottle rocket or slingshot........

More lies from the Lutherans! Strike them down!

Men of Wesley stop your dreaming,
Can't you see their spearpoints gleaming...

"...but the women around here are lazy and the men are too smart....."

I like to think that I'm smart, but for beer ....

And Bob, if you think you're going to get the beer, and get away, think again. This is in Texas!

My mom used to make this jello mold made from lime jello, cheese, cabbage, pimentos and pecans! The mother-of-all potluck terrors!!!

What, no green grapes? My brothers and sisters used to call that lime jello/green grape mold the 'Sudden Death Jello Salad.'

I would rather they treat this for the prank it is rather than an opportunity to permanently jail yet another young American

That depends on what the "chemicals" were. Even then, salvage fusing is not something "pranksters" generally do. If wouldn't have been so funny if the device had taken off some fingers of, or blinded, the custodian who found them.

FYI

Link to video of local coverage of this story. According to latest reports, officials have ruled out that this was a prank and have called in the Dept. of Homeland Security.

More mischief from the radical Lutherans, no doubt..............

Heh; we're peaceable, at least until we're backed into a corner. I thought it was the 7th-Day Adventists myself :-)

When I was an inquisitive mind in high school and in college, my buddies and I made and detonated many such harmless devices.

So did I, but I didn't leave them around, "booby trapped", for other people to find. Did you? And mine weren't harmless. Even a cherry bomb or M-80 isn't harmless if misused.

These things do run in trends. Remember goldfish swallowing, phone booth stuffing, streaking and other horrors of campus life that spread from college to college?
It was only a matter of time before TATP pranksters were seen on college campuses throughout the US.
