ASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., Sunday criticized President Bush`s nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court but said the debate should be civil.
'Number one, a lot of us wanted to see somebody that was a well-formed jurist, so that they had a track record of what they would do in key cases coming in front of the court, and we could have a debate with the country and within the Senate about what this means,' said Brown back on CBS` 'Face the Nation.'
'Miers doesn`t have that track record, and doesn`t seem to be well-informed in her judicial philosophy having never been on the bench,' he said.
Brownback noted that some Supreme Court nominees appointed by Republican presidents turned to the left once they were confirmed. He said that was because they did not have 'well-formed' judicial philosophies.
'I think you`re seeing both of these at play (with the Miers nomination,' he said. 'One, not a clear philosophical position and, number two, the potential over time of veering to the left.'
I hope you are built of asbestos - bump -
Brownback's stock just rose in my book. Has George Allen commented on Meirs? Has Mike Pence?
Ping
Senator Brownback just seriously wounded a kitten!
This is my senator, I voted for him.
Brownback's going to help sink this nomination. This guy is the real deal.
Sen. Brownback is obviously a sexist, elitist DUmmy troll. ;-)
Drudge just reported that 25 Republican Senators said they aren't yet convinced that she's worthy of being confirmed.
Oh really? You mean like Souter, Ginzburg, Stevens or O'Conner Senator? Clarence Thomas doesn't qualify for the court under this criteria. Is he suppose to resign?
Nah. He's playing to you guys.
He'll vote for her, especially if she does as well as she's likely to in the hearings.
"Sam who?" is not going to build his presidential aspirations on trashing a professional woman, is he?
"Drudge just reported that 25 Republican Senators said they aren't yet convinced that she's worthy of being confirmed."
OMG, they're all Sexist and Elitist anti christian DUmmies right???
Brownback that damn RINO!!!
LOL!
That's what hearings are for. They're suckering you boys by getting your hopes up.
""Sam who?" is not going to build his presidential aspirations on trashing a professional woman, is he?"
Nobody's trashing her. Everybody likes her personally. The issue is whether or not she has the qualifications and certainty of judicial philosophy to serve on the Supreme Court. All of the evidence says she does NOT.
My god you sound like a 3 year old child, have a intellectual discourse or please shut it.
"'Miers doesn`t have that track record, and doesn`t seem to be well-informed in her judicial philosophy having never been on the bench,' he said."
Wow, that's an understatement. Having never been a judge nor having ever ventured an opinion in writing (that has been made public) on any issues of concern to Bush's conservative base, I think it's fair to say she has no judicial philosopy.
Its safe to call this not a game of checkers but of Grand Master Chess. On Monday Specter took the podium claiming that a
potential maelstrom had been avoided by the appointment of Miers. After that Schumer spoke an said that the President was in a "box". Specters body language bespoke great confidence and a sense of personal triumph. Schumer's attitude was one of being still in the Majority. There was something humiliating in it all. Then as we watched the Presidents body language in presenting
Ms Miers, well let us say that he acted as though he did not want to be there or was not even there so was his lack of enthusiasm and pride in presentation. The question is whether this is real weakness or contrived weakness. In high stakes chess like this and with a climate and culture of declining trust in officials and in institutions righteous anger and mistrust is completely understandable.
No, that would be "sexist." And one thing the "base" will not tolerate is deviation from strict gender equity---a principle Harriet Miers is a "reliable vote" for. You're right---I acknowledge it, 'spur. Take it to the bank. Guess "Justice Miers" it is. *SIGH!*
