Angry South Africans take law into their own hands

October 09, 2005, 19:00

Communities around South Africa are angry with the police and there have been a spate of mob justice assaults and killings in the last 24 hours around the country.

People are fed up with police inefficiencies and many are now taking the law into their own hands. In Soweto two people died and one critically injured at the hands of the community. They alleged the men had been terrorizing people in Protea South in Soweto.

The survivor is in a critical condition in hospital. Residents say police took too long to get to the scene. No arrests have been made and the police have once again called on people not to take the law into their own hands.

In Eldorado Park, another 40 people have been arrested following yesterday's violent protest at the police station. Police used rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse the crowd which demanded that Gairoenisha Lee's alleged murderer be handed back to them.

Police are conducting an internal investigation into allegations that they did not respond in time.

there are videos of a child rapist in what appears to be pakistan or a philipino and they execute him by sitting him on a 5 ft stake, gravity fed slowly.

That is apparently an ancient, time-honored tradition in Africa as well.  I believe that it's commonly called 'impaling' or 'impalement'.  It was featured in the TV movie/series Shaka Zulu, and even when sanitized for prime time TV it was still utterly horrific.  It was portrayed as being popular among the tribes as one of the preferred forms of execution when they wanted to send a message of some sort.

Vlad the Impaler...
More popularly known as the basis of the character Dracula these days..

Impalement was also used by the Romans "extensively" and was common throughout the Middle East..

I'm sure that many South Africans would embrace what you suggest, but how?  The common folk have been prevented from ever acquiring real weapons and so they have no power beyond a vote, if there is any such thing as a meaningful vote in South Africa.  If they are unable to vote themselves new leadership then they will either be faced with a martial law clampdown and / or the threat of a coup, which would most likely continue the endless cycle of poverty, oppression, dictatorship, and war that has plagued so many other African nations ever since long before I was born.  I don't see a possibility of meaningful reform in the current SA government....too much corruption.  The future looks very grim.

Come a day. The French revolution was won by spades and shovels, wielded by people maddened beyond all hope by an indifferent monarchy.

Wait and see. The age of revolution is not over.
