Women's hall of fame honors Hillary Clinton, Maya Lin Saturday October 08, 2005 By BEN DOBBIN Associated Press Writer

SENECA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) Inspired by Alan Shepard, the first American to journey into space, a 14-year-old from suburban Chicago wrote a letter to NASA in 1961 asking what she needed to do to become an astronaut.

Back came a curt reply: Girls are not being recruited by the nation's space program.

``It had never crossed my mind up until that point that there might be doors closed to me simply because I was a girl,'' recalled the letter writer, better known today as former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The rejection stung her to the core, opening up the teenager's eyes to sexual stereotypes, career barriers and discriminatory practices that soon came under assault from landmark laws beginning with the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

``We have made so many advances in the last 40 years that are really unprecedented in the history of the world,'' said Clinton, one of 10 women inducted Saturday in the National Women's Hall of Fame.

``I don't think there has ever been a better time to be a woman than in the United States of America in the 21st century,'' she said in an interview. ``We have a broad scope of choices ... that really are defined by who we are and what we want as individuals and not constricted by the gender we were born into.''

Clinton, 57, the only first lady elected to the Senate, was enshrined along with Maya Lin, who designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.; Dr. Rita Rossi Colwell, who became the first female director of the National Science Foundation in 1998,

Which gets to the real reason they turned her down.
The Saturn booster hadn't been built yet.

Hillary said was named for Sir Edmond Hillary, the first white man to climb Mt. Everest

I believe she was crapped out and named several years before Sir Ed made his climb.

"I don't believe this story. I want to see a copy of the letter and the response"

Yup, someone should track down people who worked in NASA's PR at that time (hoping some are still alive 44 years later) and find out whether such letters were being written to inquiring schoolgirls. I want to see Hillary's letter and response, but I'm sure she won't produce it. This is probably another made-up piece of Hillarity's 'history'.....

Yeh, right. And then she went to enlist in the army? And she was named Hillary before Sir Edmund became famous. Betcha the letter was done on an IBM.

I'm trying to think of one "GOOD" thing this lady has done. There is nothing. She has leach. We wouldn't even know who she is if she wasn't married to Bubba.

USA Today's report on Sen. Hillary Clinton's newfound appeal as a possible commander in chief omitted a key part of her resume that proves she's long been a hawk on military and defense issues: her attempt to join the Marines 30 years ago.

Or at least that's what she claimed.

Seated beside her husband, the former first lady recounted her military experience during a 1994 TV interview.

"Gee, now it was probably 19 years ago - in 1975," Mrs. Clinton recalled. "I decided that I was very interested in having some experience in serving in some capacity in the military."

"Because we all love the military so much," Mr. Clinton interjected helpfully.

Hillary resumed: "So I walked into our local recruiting office, and I think it was just my bad luck that the person who happened to be there on duty could not have been older than 21. He was in perfect physical shape."

She remembered telling the recruiter, "I wanted to explore - I didn't know whether I thought active duty would be a good idea, reserve, you know, maybe National Guard, something along those lines."

But Hillary's bid to become a leatherneck soon came unraveled.

"This young man looked at me and he said, 'How old are you?'" she recalled.

"I said, 'Well, 27' ... I had these really thick glasses on.

"He said, 'How bad's your eyesight?'

"I said, 'It's pretty bad.'

"And he said, 'How bad?'

"So I told him.

"He said, 'That's pretty bad.'

"And he finally said to me, he said: 'You're too old. You can't see. And you're a woman.' And then he went on ... this man, young man, was a Marine.

"He said, 'But maybe the dogs [Army] would take you.'"

"This is not a very encouraging conversation," Mrs. Clinton recalled thinking. "So maybe I'll look for another way to serve my country."

The original transcript of Hillary's "I-tried-to-join-the-Marines" interview has vanished from the LexisNexis archives, but excerpts from a rebroadcast on Rush Limbaugh's old TV show are still available.

"I don't believe this story. I want to see a copy of the letter and the response. "

Dan Rather had them stuffed in his shorts while he "Exited, Stage Right..."

Fake, but True seems to work both ways.

I hate this hag. And really, I reserve my hate for those that truly deserve it. I'm not an indiscriminate hater by any means.

That letter was accidently shredded at the Rose Law Firm during the Whitewater-gate investigation, along with the approved employment records of Craig Livingstone (the former bouncer-turned-political operative).
