Terror in the heartland?
Washington Times ^ | October 7, 2005 | Editorial

Posted on 10/07/2005 3:13:47 AM PDT by baystaterebel

Not more than 100 yards from the Oklahoma-Kansas State football game on Saturday, OU student Joel Henry Hinrichs III, 21, blew himself up in what was initially believed to be a simple suicide. While his decision to kill himself seemed to match a personality friends and family describe as detached and strange, disturbing facts are beginning to emerge suggesting that Mr. Hinrichs had more sinister designs, like perhaps taking a few of the 84,000 nearby fans with him. Despite the absence of a suicide note, there is little doubt the troubled student intended to kill himself. His bizarre method, however, is more reminiscent of suicide bombers than suicidal students. For instance, at least one of the bomb components he used -- triacetone triperoxide -- was the same homemade substance used by Richard Reid, the so-called Shoe Bomber. The stuff is highly unstable. It can detonate if merely dropped, and experts say it can even explode spontaneously. The obvious questions arise: Why would someone choose to kill himself with this stuff, nicknamed the "Mother of Satan" by Islamists, if suicide were his sole purpose? Did Mr. Hinrichs intend for the bombs to go off when they did, so close to a packed stadium? Also, why carry it out as if in imitation of a suicide bomber? Suicidal people of Mr. Hinrichs' age, it is true, have a tendency for the dramatic, and perhaps that was Mr. Hinrichs' only purpose here -- to go out in such a way as to be remembered. But that still leaves open the question as to how he learned to make bombs in the first place.

Even more frightening, federal officials confirmed that a large cache of explosive material was found inside Mr. Hinrichs' university-owned apartment in Norman, Okla., which immediately placed suspicion on Mr. Hinrichs' roommate, a Pakistani Muslim, who was taken into FBI custody for questioning. He, along with two other unidentified Muslim students, were later released.

Norman itself is no stranger to Islamist activity. In 2000, Zacarias Moussaoui, the so-called 20th hijacker, took flying lessons at the city's flight school and attended a neighborhood mosque, which, according to NewsOK.com, is the same mosque that Mr. Hinrichs had been attending.

Suicide doesn't take a "large cache of explosive material".

I have been following this on other threads, and it was clear that he had more than suicide in mind. Allegedly, there were 400 lbs of explosives in the trunk of his car (a Lincoln Town Car) and 1000 lbs in his apt. There's no way his "roommate" couldn't have known about this, regardless of what he claims. In addition, where did Hinrichs - supposedly only a sparodically-employed college student - get the money to buy this stuff?

I doubt that he committed suicide at all, frankly. I think it was a "work accident."

I agree. And you're right about the money to buy the stuff too.

Yup. He had lots more explosives at home and in his car. When was he planning to use them? He also tried to get into the stadium several times, but he left each time because security wanted to check his backpack. He wanted to plant the bomb in the stadium. He went to the bench to sit down and take out the bomb and put it under his clothes, because security wasn't patting people down, and he accidentally set it off.

Mainstream media silent on OU football bomber

The mainstream media has been largely silent on the Joel H. Hinrichs III, the University of Oklahoma student who blew himself up outide the stadium hosting a football game with Kansas State University on Saturday, October 2nd. We now know that Hinrichs tried several times to enter the stadium during the first half of the game:
it’s time to put some pressure
on the mainstream media…

One OU senior, Adam Smith, of Oklahoma City, however, said a stadium guard Saturday night told him “a guy had sprinted off” outside Gate 6 after refusing to let his backpack be searched.

The Enid News writes today:

There still seem to be more questions than answers regarding last Saturday’s explosion outside the University of Oklahoma’s Memorial Stadium. According to law enforcement, Joel Henry Hinrichs III acted alone and was depressed when he strapped an explosive to himself, sat down 100 yards away from a stadium filled with 84,000 people and blew himself up.

The holes [in a tree near the bombing] appear to be about the size of the head of 16 penny nail.

Yet, this week we have learned Hinrichs attempted to buy a large quantity of ammonium nitrate at a local feed store. We have learned he had other explosive materials in his apartment, and we have learned his Muslim roommate and associates were held briefly by law enforcement immediately after the explosion.

The Oklahoma Daily is reporting that area Muslims did not see Hinrichs visiting a particular local mosque, as some earlier reported. However, news reports have :Hinrichs attending a mosque somewhere, just not the one originally identified.

Sources confirmed Tuesday that triacetone triperoxide (TATP) was one of the critical ingredients in the bomb. It’s called the “Mother of Satan” by Muslim extremists. TATP is not commonly used in the United States but has been used in the past by Muslim extremists, including the case of Richard Reid, the infamous shoe-bomber, who was unable to detonate the material. The material was also used in the July mass transit bombings in London. Other explosives were found at Hinrichs’ apartment.

Blogger Mark Tapscott is reporting that authorities found 13 plastic bottles in Hinrichs’ car trunk and small, round holes in a tree near the bomb site:

A Lincoln Town Car registered in the name of OU Suicide Bomber Joel Henry Hinrichs III remained as of 4:00 p.m. EST today in the parking lot of the apartment where he lived and a U.S. Department of Justice inventory of the contents found by law enforcement officials was visible on the seat, Tapscott’s Copy Desk has learned.

Among the items listed on the inventory are “13 plastic bottles” in the trunk. The inventory did not note if there was anything in the bottles, their size or coloration. The blue Lincoln was registered in Oklahoma under Hinrichs’ name in June of this year, according to state tag records. The expiration date on the tag was February 2006.

Tapscott’s Copy Desk has also learned that a tree near where Hinrichs’ bomb detonated displays a number of small round holes and some areas of a metallic substance. The holes and substance are only on the side facing the bench on which Hinrichs was seated when the bomb detonated. The holes appear to be about the size of the head of 16 penny nail.

…Hinrichs had inquired about purchasing large quantities of ammonium nitrate, which can be used to form an explosive. Hinrichs was apparently wearing a vest with what appeared to be wires sticking out of it.

Gateway Pundit confirms the Oklahoma City Channel 5 News report and Oklahoma City’s News 9 that Hinrichs had inquired about purchasing large quantities of ammonium nitrate, which can be used to form an explosive. Hinrichs was apparently wearing a vest with what appeared to be wires sticking out of it.

Dustin Ellison, the general manager of Ellison Feed & Seed on Porter Avenue, said that a man matching Hinrichs’ description had come into the store days before he blew himself up on OU’s campus. Ellison said the man asked about ammonium nitrate, but couldn’t offer a reason why he needed it.

After the bombing, Ellison said he thought nothing of it. However, when he saw Hinrichs’ photo, it triggered his memory.

Finally, Channel 5 news reports that Hinrichs’ Pakistani Muslim roommate was detained briefly after the bombing:

NORMAN, Okla. — The Pakistani roommate of a man authorities said died when he detonated an explosive device outside a crowded football stadium was led in handcuffs from a party shortly after Saturday’s explosion, the head of an Islamic student group said.

Fazal M. Cheema, a finance major, shared a university-owned apartment with Joel Hinrichs III, 21, who died Saturday when a device attached to his body exploded as he sat on a bench outside George Lynn Cross Hall.

Cheema and three other Muslim students were led in handcuffs from a party by police after the blast, Ashraf Hussein, president of the Muslim Student Association, said Tuesday. They later were released.

It’s time to put some pressure on the mainstream media to begin reporting these things. The more we learn about Hinrichs, the more questions we have about his beliefs and his behavior.

Update: 4:55 PM CDT

Steve Warshawsky writes at The American Thinker:

No “normal” person commits suicide by blowing himself up in public with a backpack full of explosives. Yet that is the official story regarding Joel Henry Hinrichs III, who was killed Saturday night in an explosion outside the University of Oklahoma’s football stadium, where 80,000 fans were watching a game.

For surely, in the absence of compelling evidence to the contrary, anyone who blows himself up in public near large crowds of people should be presumed to be a terrorist, not a bizarrely suicidal college student.
